Microsoft must be kicking itself that it acquired (and wrote off 7.6B) the phone business and not Nokia's patents.

As much as I detest Apple, the concept of signing a deal to partner for ongoing development with Nokia is an interesting departure from their usual "acquire and absorb" strategy.

My thoughts exactly. I imagined law enforcement officers responding to a robbery or some such armed with those things and the criminals have a portable transmitter to shut the guns down.

We never use such a word in contexts other than programming for a set of letters sticking together, and yet – in programming it’s as pervasive as the word “variable”. Why is that, and where does it come from? Because "hunk of characters that probably aren't numbers" was to long?

That was a very lengthy read (and granted, somewhat interesting) to basically state (though I don't think he ever did actually) that "string" is shorthand for "string of chars", just like we might say a necklace is a string of beads, or an idea is a string of thoughts, or a sentence is a string of words. Basically, anything that you can drill holes through (literally or figuratively) and lace a string (literally or figuratively) through to create a sequential arrangement.
And that string was considerably shorter than that article!

Until very recent patches, a bug in a little-examined Wi-Fi chip would have allowed a hacker to invisibly hack into any one of a billion devices. This is why I only ever use tin cans and string. No one hacks those.

Javascript (and therefore by extension Node.js) does some things beautifully well. The way in which it implements asynchronicity using callbacks is simple and straight-forward. The fact that functions are first-class citizens makes for highly reusable code.
But then there is the absolute clusterfuck that is type coercion.
It has some good parts and some bad parts. The trick is to know which is which.

Agreed. And like my experience with Ruby, Javascript can look beautiful in the hands of an expert. In everyone else's hands (including mine, BTW, but I'm learning) it looks like a bowl of spaghetti. Granted that is true for any language, but some languages seem to inherently promote that kind of coding more than others. One day I'll sit down and think about it and write an article on why.
