Guess IBM does not qualify as a tech company anymore. Sort of have to agree. Apple really is not a tech company either. More a marketing company.

Actually, maybe some of those tech companies will survive because the government will consider them too big to fail.

Yeah, I could definitely see a bailout happening for many of the top line IT shops (I'm looking at you, HP). Then again, I never thought the US government would allow the sale of IBM's laptop division to China.

The sale of a laptop division now looks fairly irrelevant. Even then, it was hard to make a lot of money on intel computers, only the Mac was really making much money. Seems like if there is not a lot of profit in something, the Americans cannot make if affordably.
If they can make the chips, the rest really does not matter anyway. Getting the the point that the only thing the matters is the software, and that can be written pretty much anywhere.

That's the part that both worries me [1], and excites me (especially as I live anywhere).
[1] I just heard of another couple of internal projects at a customer (not here) heading "away". Fortunately, only one really affects me, but only by allowing me to mock it from afar.

I was hired by No 16. on that list. After the interview I had to throw away my shirt - it was soaked with sweat, and it was the end of November 
The actual work there, though, was much less challenging than the interview.

It can definitely be a nasty process: especially for the dev jobs, I hear. Well done.
I still have no clue how I got past the process. Probably because it was free latte day, so everyone was happy (and my answers came out really fast).

We are building here something quite big (also trains won't go so fast, standard trains, but still about 250 km/h). It's a 57 kilometers long tunnel across the Alps, and it's almost finished.

Think this is BS. JS is a horrible language, which is almost impossible to maintain. Great efforts are gone to bypass. It may become more prevalent under the covers, but this will be hidden from the developer.

Yup, a definite link bait article (but you know how I love those). Maybe in the mode you propose (wrapped by a better language), but I think there are so many other good languages out there.
JavaScript has always struck me as a weird hacked together language, made popular by its wide distribution.

Possibly because the 1.0 spec was kludged together in a few days; and for something designed so fast I've expected a much larger cluster-elephant than it actually is.

What I always thought was rediculous was that the language ended up being the one used to embed in HTML, and it was not even well designed for that since it uses HTML reserved symbols. Could have just about used any language.

Too Little Too Late. I do not think Microsoft will have a Windows 9, in the sense that the number will not be used in marketing. I would not be surprised if the word windows disappears totally from name. Hopefully when they release the next desktop environment they will have learned. Also the Metro style was out of date before Windows 8 was released.

Metro works fine on phones, desktops less so (IMO).
What I'm curious about is whether there's an internal (to the Windows org) group trying to ensure that Azure isn't successful. If it (and Office 365) continues to grow as it has, why would anyone need a new local OS every few years?

Does it still run fine when there are no "serious" apps to run? 
My laptop broke last week and I was about to buy a Sony Vaio Duo hybrid, to use both desktop apps and mobile apps on the go. Then decided against it after doing a few searches on "Metro" store. Also dualbooting Android x86 and Windows 8 x64 isn't an option ATM, and Bluestacks is propriatry and don't make it easy to upgrade the Android kernel that it runs.
Instead, just upgraded my old SGS1 to SGS4, and installed chrooted Debian. Guess I'll wait for an Android/Ubuntu hybrid tablet/laptop to replace my broken laptop

Even so, from what I can tell Windows phones have not done so well in the market places. From what I can tell the only Microsoft phones that were considered good are the silverlight versions, and the Windows team seems to have managed to get Silverlight killed (I am making an assumption here).
