This afternoon I was working on a Regular Expression to split a DNS name and suddenly up jumped an entry like:

And the article is actually about test data. Yeah, knowing how the data are likely to look like is quite an advantage when writing software, I guess.

I don't know about Oregons laws specifically; but in some states the baseline engineer title is restricted to certified/professional engineers; and that anyone else who has an engineering degree has to use something from a proscribed set of lesser titles that (to anyone who knows the minutia of the local law anyway) indicate that they don't have the same level of certification and aren't permitted to be the lead on major industrial/civil engineering projects. More relaxed jurisdictions (AFAIK most of the US) do work the way you're suggesting with a specific title for certified people and a free for all otherwise.
