It's been ten days, and I'm still in the constant-itch phase. Probably will be until Christmas, I've smoked for years. Quitting is my Christmas present to myself.
So I chose a work assignment in Chennai as a catalyst for my quit, away from the usual triggers and habits and friends, and it's working, but Holy God since the floods hit everything has stopped working, and now I am marooned in an office, nothing to do but work, and these marathon work sessions are where I used to really love a smoke as a break from the grind.
Mind you that's a small complaint compared with some of the misery I saw when I waded into the office the other day. Over 60 have died, already. I'm actually glad to have the crappy office and desk as my shelter.

I have been smoking for 10 years, since I was in high school.
I haven't smoke for ~5 months now.
Significantly improved my strength and how I look.
Go for it, quit, cold turkey, your brain may say "please, one last smoke then we will quit", dont listen to it, just quit, go gym, eat fruit, do programming, just quit.

I think you didn't understand my joke, but nonetheless i agree quitting smoking is not that hard, i for my self started quitting, then realised i don't need it but i want it.
Now i switched to mini cigars, cigars and pipe smoking and smoke whenever i feel like to do it or are in a proper surrounding. It's not a thing like "I need a smoke now" but more a "hmm now feeling comfty" and just sit down enjoying a pipe or a cigar to my whisky.

Have you seen the pictures of the airport on the news sites? 15 feet of standing water in places. They reckon it's shut until at least Tuesday.

I had a bad cold which did not let me even think of smoking for a week or two. After that was over, I cultivated this aversion and simply did not start again.

A few years ago I got an 'E' cigarette, which really helped me quit. Now I don't smoke at all, and only 'vape' if I am duty driver at a function where alcohol is consumed. Two Christmas's ago - I got the short straw. This year, folks are coming to us.

I smoked for 23+ years, and quit about 10 years ago, before my son was born. You really have to be ready to quit, for it to work. If there is one shred of not wanting to quit, then you will most likely not quit.
I used the gum. It really helped me, and did not make me sick to my stomach, like the patch. It took me about 4 months to quit, using the gum.

Stop Smoking, a very good idea! Still I'm fighting with it. It has the smell of Advertising, but I like to mention "Allen Carrs". In my environment I know 6 People who stopped Smoking after reading his book. All of them not esoteric and very realistic People....

It is not "self-destructive", unless you want to classify driving a car like the same.
It can be an unhealthy habit, but given the amount of unhealthy stuff out there, I could not care less. I don't want to live 200 years healthy, I'd rather have five minutes of fun.

That's my attitude as well, or used to be, but since I got into the running and in particular swimming it's become painfully obvious what it's doing to me and my breath control. My Gran smoked three packs of major a day and lived to 93, but she died of emphysema. I spent some time in hospital recently, and it brought the memories back. It's not about living longer, it's about enjoying the life you have.
So, I'm planning to go full-on Rocky 4 this Winter; running in the snowy hills around Zurich, pounding bags, lifting weights, starting international incidents over personal grudges.... 
I want rustlers, cut throats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, vipers, snipers, con men, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswogglers, horse thieves, bull dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, ass-kickers, sh*t-kickers and Methodists.

I don't have children or a wife to worry about, that's probably part of why it's taken me so long to get my head together and just quit; you can rationalise self-harm a lot easier when it's just you.
I have two main motivating factors; I am getting quite seriously into distance running and outdoor pursuits in general, in fact it's more true to say that I always have been, but lately I'm finding it difficult, huffing and puffing, and I don't want to lose that part of my life that gives me so much joy.
Also, I'm seeing my folks at Christmas, and I want to be able to hang out with my Mum and not smoke, she hates it when I smoke and it guilt-trips me to bejeezus.
