Had a pretty good Christmas, been fighting bronchitis but better now.
Hope you had a good Christmas as well and this will be a prosperous New Year.

Hard to imagine that not too long ago it required a highly paid database administrator (and staff) to keep you away from "the database" and any server installations.

And developers still shouldn't go anywhere near "The Database"!
That's why it's so (relatively) easy to install and Express edition of SQL Server - and you can test on a local copy without risking production data.

A good news is all latest Microsoft UI framework are pretty much the same.
WPF, UWP, WinUI all have very similar API.
Last I checked, even Xamarin, working on non MS OS, was quite similar, just had different panels... So you'll get it!
If it's a web thing, MVC hasn't changed much all those year, and MVC encourage knowing HTML, which comes handy with the latest shiny (very shiny) new web tech: Blazor !
So.. good luck, live long and prosper!

Good to see you still around! I've never been able to master the art of linking a SQL DB to a C# app, something everyone else here can probably do in their sleep, but I'm going to try it again. Have a wonderful New Year!

I retired after 35 years of programming using both VS and MSS the last 20 years, proud of my career. But sadly I was forced to use MySQL since the free MSS can't be used on a home network, only standalone on a single PC. I think both TCP/IP and Named Pipes cannot be configured on the free version, leaving only the memory access client available. So far the only thing I've missed is real time backups.

That's good information, Brian! Thanks! Fortunately, my need is simple; track my stock market trades without having to resort to pencil and paper. Twenty years ago I would have fired up Access and gone at it, only to find that (then) I couldn't distribute the run time to anyone without paying a ridiculous fee to MS. The free version of SQLServer is more than enough to do this simple task. If I get it working for me, I plan to give it to friends who are in the same trading groups as I frequent, and intend it to be a simple single-machine program. I'm still working on the top level design in my head, though, while figuring out how to use this, once-familiar IDE. Last year I managed 68% return using straight equities combined with options, and while it's easy to find stock tracking software, the combination is readily available. Happily, there're only about 40 basic options trades, so that limits how flexible it needs to be. Expect to see me in the Q & A section a lot...

Virtually every bog-standard Windows hosted webserver account includes your own MS Sql Server d/b these days. When using MS Sql Server for projects, I've long since given up hosting the d/b on the dev server - just host it on the web. (That way clients / potential clients / friends / the world can access it if it turns out to be useful / interesting / money making).

Good move. One challenge you will find is where to get good advice. I started using a few sites regularly but find one in particular not friendly to anything they consider a "stupid question". I always fall back on Codeproject - even if I am having a brain dead day no one is ever rude about it.

No worries, I wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. I've been here a couple of decades already; I used to earn beer money babysitting for Chris's mum when he was teething!

When I went to Universal Orlando with my family, the Rocket Launch: NET September 15, 2021, 8:02 PM EDT | SpaceX Falcon 9 Inspiration4 launched while we were in CityWalk. You could see the layers of the atmosphere have holes in them as them passed through. One of the best things to watch is a launch.
