The EU Wants Powers To Sack Journos[^]
Seriously?
Print what we tell you or be fired?
Free Speech?
Democracy?
They want complete press regulation and if you dare to print things that are deemed wrong by the unelected dictators you will be punished!
Why?
Is it because them damned pesky journalists keep writing the truth and it hurts the egos of the elite?
They do not want the masses knowing what the hell they are up to?
Ministry of Truth anybody?
I shall have a major double-unthink about this!

It's like a perfect storm for the Torygraph: Europe and Press regulation. Somehow I doubt this article is unbiased, though I can't find anything about the basis for the story.

You Europeans are new to this United thing. After you pass through your own version of the "McCarthy Era", everything will settle down.
Hell - let's get this Euro-Version started:
Are you, or have you ever been, associated with the British Royal Family or anyone French ?

Maybe we should put all journalists in little camps where they can be trained how to behave?

Over here, the press would rather BE the news than report it.

err, they are not suggesting that the EU has the powers but that national regulators do.
It's the same as the whole banana bollocks. The rule was about the shape of the banana for it to be Class I, not that you couldn't have bendy bananas - that part was journalistic hogwash.
So back to the fine print, what is being suggested? Each member state needs a fully independent regulator and the regulator needs the power to enforce fines and withdraw press cards.
Sh*t, just what Leverson is calling for...

Any government with a regulator to control the press is stifling free speech.
Say I reported on a potentially dangerous flaw in a standard issue weapon.
The government could remove my licence, and hence my profession, simply because I caused it embarrassment.
They would use the excuse of 'Nation Defence' and 'Security', meanwhile poor bloody Tommy gets his head blown off.
There should be no official or governmental oversight of a free press.
When a paper goes beyond the pale, it answers to its readers.

No.
It is not a government led regulator but an independent one. Much like the PCC should be.

Not with any deep knowledge of the subject but I do believe that there are several countries in the EU that already have censorship powers over the press. Perhaps not where you are but there are some.

I'm sure Telegraph reporting is really unbiased on European matters . I don't see this story widely reported elsewhere so I'm not sure it's the big deal they are claiming.
I think it's more about encouraging individual countries to set up meaningful media oversight bodies rather than trying to control media Europe-wide.

So you mean that the nanny state that you Europeans love, actually wants to control you?
