Sander Rossel wrote: Do you play board games? If so, any recommendations? Haven't played many lately, but I've always loved Monopoly. It takes a while to play, but it's a classic for a reason.
If we extend this to card games, Uno is totally a favorite in the south. It's quick and fun to play a few rounds. And as crazy as it might sound, I enjoy just playing Blackjack on occasion. Don't have to gamble real money just to play it.
If it's your girlfriend and not kids, the adult themed card games are fun too. I've had blast playing Cards Against Humanity with friends and coworkers. Just ordered WHAT DO YOU MEME? New Phone, Who Dis? also and looking forward to playing that.

I used to play war games with cardboard maps and counters.
I still find playing that way a lot more fun than on the computer.
Unfortunately, I don't know anyone in my area who would be interested in doing this...

These are not really board games, but two of my all-time favorites are Love Letter and Guillotine. Both are card games that are super well-designed (both in terms of the art and the rules). Sadly, Love Letter changed hands at some point and new cards were added - I assume this is a bad thing, because it was a perfect game. In any case, I have not played the new version so I can only vouch for the old AEG variants.

I've been thinking of learning shogi, which is a Japanese chess-like game. Some interesting differences:
The lower-ranked pieces can be promoted by flipping them over- so a rook can become a dragon, and the dragon has additional movement options.
Captured pieces can be returned to the board on the side of the player who captured them. The idea is that they're mercenaries who have switched sides.
The downside is that I'd have to memorize the characters designating each piece, and how they move, but there are programs and apps to teach you.
I got to try Wingspan, and that was fun. I'd like to play it again.

There used to be an anime on Netflix about a shogi player, so I actually know the game!
Never played it though, the nearest shogi club near me is a good hour drive.
I'm surprised there's a shogi club in the Netherlands at all though
There are international shogi sets by the way: Shogi - Wikipedia[^]
At one point in the series, the main character tries to explain the rules to a kid he's baby sitting.
This rather catchy children's song, which explain the rules, comes on: Nyan Shōgi - YouTube[^]
It still pops into my head from time to time
I especially liked the opening song from season 2 though: March comes in like a lion Season 2 Opening Full『YUKI - Flag wo Tatero』 - YouTube[^]

March Comes In Like a Lion is a great series, and it probably added to my thoughts about learning it. I don't think I'd ever go to the extent of studying famous games for anything.
I have learned to play Hanafuda Koi Koi, a card game that's much easier. It shows up in Summer Wars and a number of other shows. I've played Hanafuda at SF cons. The other goal is to learn the Japanese version of Mahjongg. My wife and I got tired of the American version, where you get a card each year that says what the winning hands are for the year. You spend all your time studying the card instead of just playing.
I would buy a set of Nyan shoji pieces in a heartbeat!
