I remember the mess from my commercial inkjet dev days - that ink wouldn't travel far to correctly mark the product, but it would go a looooong way out of it's way to wreck another shirt ...
I think my least favorite part was handling materials compatibility with the inks - the damned aliphatic hydrocarbon base was a PITA to deal with. And what it was OK with the solvent based ink would eat.

OriginalGriff wrote: that ink wouldn't travel far to correctly mark the product It's always been noteworthy that our water-based inks adhere to skin and clothing a lot better than they do paper.OriginalGriff wrote: solvent based ink Definite ick factor there. Fortunately we haven't done solvent-based inks in a long time; the fumes were horrible.

Not fun, but better than MEK. Didn't have the drying time though, but you could use them in chocolate factories.

We tested with MEK for a while. One of the programmers here had his lab moved to another part of the building the fumes were so bad.

Yeah - and chocolate has an "affinity" for it: carry a CIJ through a chocolate factory and the whole lot tastes of it. Fortunately we never got involved - too much hassle for the profit we'd have made.

Please stop whining and rewrite from scratch the whole stuff!

As much as I'd love too, this stuff supports a lot of older equipment that isn't available here at our plant any longer. I wouldn't have any way to test it, other than shipping it off to a customer. My bosses frown on that sort of thing .

I once did a project for a purveyor of very expensive ink that measured the volume of individual droplets of ink. The units of measure were picoliters.

The drops our current systems produce are 11.4 pL (picoliters) and 9.8 pL. We actually count the things as a means of measuring ink usage; unsigned __int64 , anyone?

I can't really discuss why, but I thought I'd mention it, because if I don't, nobody else would.
