Nasa calls time on silent Opportunity Mars rover - BBC News[^]
14 years longer than design spec, drove 45 times as far as expected, found proof of ancient water on Mars.
Big kudos to the designers!

If you think about all that could have gone wrong, and didn't, it is truly amazing.

And the software as well - it only had a 20MHz processor, and they wouldn't use that in a toaster these days!

In toasters they traditionally use Intel Pentium II, which swallowed no less than 250W at full speed. Even more if you overclock it. In a toaster they don't need to actually work. With the manufacturing processes of the time they produced enough bad processors and excellent heating elements at the same time.

His last invention was an evil Lasagna. It didn't kill anyone, and it actually tasted pretty good.

Not to mention the Voyagers, they have been going for decades longer than expected.

Well, they did have to make their way home from the Delta quadrant.

The Delta Quadrant would be a ride around the block for Voyager 6. Look what happened when it came back in 1979[^] and found the planet infested with carbon units.

and that's why NASA's budget got cut: they clearly overbuilt every time.
the ESA had their budget cut too: crash testing on location, well that was a tad too overdone.
(and how many times do you have to repeat that test to find out that it really is a bad idea?)

The time: 03:31, 14th February 2019.
The place: My bed.
Herself: "Wake up! Something is talking in your office!"
Me: "Wablurkle? Hurgleflip?"
Herself: "WAKE UP! Something is TALKING in your office!"
I listen. Nothing.
Me: "What did it say?"
Herself: "«Attention Please: battery low.»"
Herself: "You better go look."
I drag myself out of bed (a complex process given where the cat is and the degree of retribution I get if I wriggle too much).
I look round the office. Nothing is on, except the "always on" stuff - router, NAS, traditional bunch of chargers, freezer.
Go and get a glass of water. Go back to bed.
Time: 04:01
«Attention Please: battery low.»
Smoke detector. And it's going to do this every 30 minutes until I fix it. Sod.
Go downstairs again, remove battery from detector.
Report back on actions.
Herself: "At least it wasn't anything important, like the router."
As I said, priorities.
