No, when I follow these instructions the icon stays below in the taskbar:
1. In the corner of your screen, click the Launcher and then Up arrow.
2. Find the app that you want to add.
3. Right-click the app icon.
4.Click Pin to Shelf.
Dragging the icon to the desktop makes it disappear ...

The bit I saw was: Quote: Pin a web page to your desktop
If you often go to the same web page, you might want to pin it to your desktop.
Open the web page in Chrome.
Click More More and then Create shortcut.
To add the shortcut to your shelf, click Create.
Which to my mind implied a desktop shortcut to a page.

Mystery solved, I received the following answer from the Google Support forum:
Quote: Well...that's because you do not put shortcuts to the desktop. There is no desktop: this is not Windows. You put shortcuts on the Launcher Bar:
Besides this, till now I'm quite impressed with this very cheap Chromebook, there is a review about it here: Acer Chromebook 11 (2018) - Review 2018 - PCMag UK[^]

I've had enough of "app stores" (phone/ipad). I refuse to let that paradigm infect my desktop/laptop.

Don't you get sick of companies telling you that the total f***-ups they're producing are "the way of the future"?
Toolbars are out, and effluent ribbons are the way of the future?
Menus are out, and baby blocks are the way of the future?
Privacy is out, and being owned by tech giants is the way of the future?
When they do that, don't say "Oh, OK"; say "F*** You!"

I thought you switched to Linux? Aren't Linux app repositories basically the same as an app store?
|
|
|
|

They're a convenience, as opposed to a requirement. The reason they exist is because of the wack-a-doodle dependencies that are much more difficult to wrangle.

Having used Linux before the repositories existed I'd suggest the convenience is damn near a requirement. The insane dependency tree and even more insane installation process of even simple Linux apps a decade ago was beyond belief.
Over the years I've used DOS (v2 - v6) / Windows (v3 - v10), OS X, iOS, Linux (various distros both old and new), Android and Chrome OS. All of them have their strengths and weaknesses and all of them are moving in a similar direction. They are maturing... app curation is one direction they are all moving.

Ah, but ... upgrades can be very expensive indeed!

Especially when the wife isn't a participant in the upgrade.

Yeah I saw that. Did you see the article about the 1967 GT500 Supersnake prototype? Sold for 2.2 million...

Yes, I read it. I guess if you have the money, then it really isn't a big deal. Most people will be aghast at spending that much on a car. Oh well...

I know a guy up in new england that bought a barn-find GT500, and has spent over 90k (including the cost of the car) just to get it to the point that it can be driven.

Shelby's are not practical. I am going to assume that people who buy Shelby's are people who enjoy collecting fast sports cars and fixing them up...more of a hobby than a family car. I believe John owns a Shelby and is a Shelby enthusiast.
The car you linked to is practical, less manly, but practical. I would never be caught dead driving that car, but I can't knock the logic for buying it, and would not make fun of any man who did drive that car...publicly .
To each their own.

While I agree with you about the muscle cars I was astonished by the performance of the Skoda wagon when I hired one in the UK about a decade ago. It had the Audi TT motor and willingly picked up it's skirts and bolted down the M40 to Shropshire.

I don't own a Shelby, but am a Shelby enthusiast. My car requires an almost disturbing amount of testosterone to drive.

I am trying to find a link to your car. I could swear you linked to a youtube car video a while back, plus you had a website at one time with pics of your car? Not sure on that one.
