I've been embattled with my wife's 5 y/o all-in-one HP system for over a week. When we came home from Thanksgiving travel, it was blue-screened with an error of 'machine check exception'. After trying all the usual fixes (it's had issues with updates in the past) and getting nowhere, I decided to let Windows reinstall while saving the files and personal files. That also failed. I decided that it must be hardware related and planned a strategy for saving her files and getting her system back.
I first pulled the HDD and hooked it up to another system and pulled all of her stuff. The plan was to do a fresh WinTen install on a new SSD and get another RAM chip in case that was the bad component. Luckily, my local supplier had everything in stock (prices on SSDs just keep getting better) so I walked out with a new 480GB SSD, a 4GB laptop memory chip, and a copy of WinTen Home on a tiny USB stick. Everything seems to be going to plan until the first restart when it says 'Setting Up Devices'. At 50% it froze, then blue-screened with the same error message as before.
Swap out the single memory chip for the new one and try again...same result. OK, so it's not the memory...start removing panels and devices, changing bios device settings and retrying. Over the last 24 hours, I must have typed in that 25 character key over a dozen times, and watched countless hours of spinning balls, only to be met with failure...until I tried about the only 'simple' device to remove, the wifi adapter, held in place by a single screw. Whoever tightened that little screw over-torqued it and it put up a fight. A few minutes with a pair of mini-cutters (I call them dykes, but I don't know why) and I finally got it loose. I repeat the install with advanced options, again deleting all the new partitions that the installer seems intent on creating, enter the crazy long key again, and wait patiently...'Setting Up Devices'...and it completes! Ah, victory!
I connected it to the outside world using the LAN and it set about getting any unknown device drivers. The system is way better now than new, the biggest reason being the SSD upgrade, but also because it doesn't have all of that crapware that HP puts on. It was a decent system until the 10 upgrade when it would fail during updates and would take more than a minute to get to the login screen, then at least another two minutes before being usable. Now it's less than 10 seconds, so an instant improvement. Luckily, I re-use the memory chip that turned to be OK, and double the RAM and get even better...can't hurt.
And now back to the headline...how is it that a mature OS such as WinTen can be stopped dead in it's tracks by a rogue Wifi NIC? It's not a critical device so why not disable it and move on? Also, it would have been nice to show the device name in either the error in the blue screen, or during the installation so I might have had a clue as to where to start!
Since this issue first occurred after an update on a working WinTen system, it wouldn't surprise me that someone here may experience the same issue. Sorry, I haven't yet looked at the old HDD to determine which update broke it, but the fact that a fresh WinTen installation also failed has me baffled...although, I can't rule out the fact that the NIC may have suddenly suffered a meltdown causing chaos for the OS...or the installation keys at the stores are really up to date!
Alas, she probably won't be happy that I won't be eating crow and going back to buy the new 'prettier' one with a bigger screen that she was checking out while I was rounding up parts. Now, if I can just find all those screws... And to think, I was really close to offering a free boat anchor here!

Closest I've had with something like that is a HP laptop, back with Gen 3 i%'s were current that had a WiFi NIC that heated the laptop to the point of being able to cook an egg.
It took a while to get hot before causing issues and unless you were checking for heat it wasn't noticed with the laptop sitting on a desk.

Completely the opposite of that, I once installed some software while the WiFi was turned on, and ever after I had to have the WIFI turned on for the software to work.
Took me forver to figure out why the software woulnd't run.

I love my new 17-inch Dell. It came with 8GB DDR4 RAM and a 2TB analog drive with Windows 10. Before I even booted it up the first time, I swapped out the 2TB drive for a 500GB nVME drive, and added 8GB of RAM. Installed Ubuntu and haven't even once wished I had kept Win10.

I found that AR (I have a video in mind with a parrot wlaking near a mini-T-Rex, can't find a link now) or even CGI[^] had quite a breakthrough this year. AR is getting ... "realer".

I manage a number of websites and use domain forwarding of the URL to where the donated webspace lives. All of a sudden, the links using the domain, regardless of path, all went back to the home page. Worked properly as recently as last week (Wednesday).
So I called GoDaddy tech support - the lady-tech said I must have malware or a virus and should subscribe to their service to clean and protect the site. $205/yr. Well - I didn't bite that poisoned apple.
I went through the website and replaced the forwards with links to the true domain so once on the site, everything works. I still wanted to know what's going on.
Today I found out about the with/without path redirection options they offer.
Solved: Domain redirect to specific pages has stopped work... - GoDaddy Community[^]
The are several posts, including the solution.
This is a scam perpetrated by them. It seems related to renewals, and sure enough, that is the day the renewal of the domain came into affect.
They are a bunch of dirty dogs.

Sorry to hear of your troubles.
As soon as I read "GoDaddy..." in your post I knew that was the root issue.
I had suffered much from GoDaddy two different times and they were absolutely clueless or purposefully unhelpful each time.
So I made the switch to SmarterASP.net - Unlimited ASP.NET Web Hosting[^]
It was a little painful to convert all 5 of my sites over there (with some backing DBs) but it was well worth it.
I have found SmarterASP to be helpful. You get the feeling that the people running the smarterasp have a stake in keeping it running.
You can use my referral id if you like : SmarterASP.net - Unlimited ASP.NET Web Hosting[^]
You can even try it for 60 days with no credit card to insure it supports your sites.
Anything I can do to get people way from GoDaddy. Good luck.

Thanks for sympathy. Mainly, it get me riled and energized.
Fortunately (although it's why the problem suddenly exist) I use domain forwarding to an independent host site. All I need to do to move the site is transfer the domain and set up domain forwarding.
Copying over email forwards will be a hassle - but I can get a dump of them to a flat file and it at least, via the blessings of cut-and-paste, be rather easy.
And transparent to the users.
I followed your link and needed to send then an inquiry based upon what I need. Funny how finding so much of the pricing, such as Domain renewal pricing, is not straight forward on any of these sites.

I, in fact, did.
Told them they're no different than the callers from Microsloth that need to remove a virus from my computer. They keep playing "I didn't know" - so, a screen shot, then a link - and of course I don't expect any results.
Along the way, after she read the items, I noted that really nothing I hear from GoDaddy cannot be taken as a lie. Oddly enough, I believe I got the tech on my side. If she was telling the truth, the assholes not only blindside customers but blindside their own tech support. Or just another liar.
As a number of other domain start to expire they will all be moving. Even if it cost a bit more for the same services I used to have (although apparently it's less). Voting with my feet (or in this case, wallet).
