Is Curiosity avoiding those rocks on Mars on its own or is it getting directions from Mission Control on Earth?
Atlas from Boston Dynamics scores high on dexterity ( it can jump while running and do other operations that require body dexterity ) but there is nothing displayed about operations that require planning. Things like picking something in one room and leaving it in another or navigating through obstacles (for example all sorts of stuff laying on the ground)

It drives itself: How Perseverance Drives on Mars β NASA Mars Exploration[^]
[edit]
That's about Perseverance, but Curiosity does the same, with a difference: NASA plan routes for it that avoid some terrain types, after a patch of "Gator back rock" chewed it's wheels up quite badly.

Ping time to Mars is on the average around 25 minutes, but it may be more than 40 minutes when Mars and Earth are on opposite sides of the sun. Hardly ideal conditions for direct control from Earth!

Half way joking, half serious what if we set a base on the Moon wouldnβt that get us closer to Mars?
It depends upon where the moon is in its orbit, whether it's closer to Mars or further from Mars than Earth. Plus, the distance to the moon is around 1.5 light seconds, so it wouldn't make much of a difference when you're talking to/from Mars.
The difficult we do right away...
...the impossible takes slightly longer.

Plus, since the moon orbits the Earth on average the distance to Mars would be the same - except when the body of the moon or the Earth is between the transmitter and Mars which would probably disrupt comms quite a bit.

Most space technologies deal with delayed response issues because of the distances involved.
Real-time planning and real-time responses are part of it. Optics (laser signals) are included.
Faster than light communication will be the next big hurdle (quantum entanglement?)

sure: i'm having fresh made soy milk with my own secret recipe of various Thai/Indian spices baked with melted coconut palm sugar with heaps of butter.
i'd send you some, but, the unprocessed hard cakes of the sugar reeking of spices might look suspicious.
