At work we use a product called "Cybermation" , its formal name is "Enterprise Scheduling System (EPS)". At first I hated it, then I thought, hey, it beats 5,000 tasks, or windows services.
A long term goal I have, is building something like it. The way it works with Active Directory is nice. It puts a small db on the target prod server, and credentials are cached.
In short, something like this is really beneficial, because we have 10's of thousands of jobs running on this.
Informatica is also funneled into this, as well as a lot of other big products.

Another Scheduling product I see i SKYBOT , it looks more modern.

I tend to create SQL Server Agent jobs (C# console programs); with a scheduled start.
The "dashboard" works well. Jobs can be any type. Easily restarted.
No agent for the SQL Server Express version though.

and what if it's only halfway up?

I'm still waiting to hear what happened here. Basically our Redis server went into an unstable state (kinda fits our current mood, really). It was soundly kicked and we're back in business.
The thing that really irks us is the monitoring systems were all saying Life's Goodtm.
cheers

The latest move by Microsoft to purchase GITHub in an all-stock offer is making rounds on the headlines. Is it good for Microsoft or GitHub? Would open source be challenged by proprietary software?

There's a very good article about this linked on the Insider News forum today - I recommend you read it.
The point is this - GitHub is leaking cash like nobody's business and can only realistically survive if bought by one of the tech giants.
Of those giants, Microsoft are the only one that has shown any genuine commitment to open source.
If you have a compelling argument as to why it would be in safer hands with Google, Facebook, Amazon or IBM, I'd love to hear it.

Hmmmm.... I guess that makes sense.
I (and many others) use the free service.
There are no advertisements, so how would they make any money?
And that leads us to an interesting set of things to think about.
* Companies eat money to survive -- if nothing else just to pay employees.
* Many users are turned off by free stuff that has advertising.
* Often those same users are turned off by a large company buying out the company.
How can the company survive if they have no revenue stream? They cannot.
They're either going to monetize the site (advertise) or be bought up by the Big Corp.
I really like GitHub and hope it doesn't change under M$ direction.
