Tonight I start an early and long weekend and planned to put some Bratwurst on the grill. Perhaps something traditional[^] with salad and fried potatos, but no Sauerkraut. I hate that stuff, despite all stereotypes.
And then there is peace, justice and the American way[^]. Sacrilege! Can't you guys eat anything that's not in a bun?
It gets even worse: Vegan Beer Brats[^]. The thing in that bun looks like they fried a molerat.

Buns are OK for some types of sausages, but not for bratwurst. OTOH, the relish actually sounds tasty.

Here[^] perhaps? They also make a kosher variance of the Thuringer Bratwurst[^] even though I'm not sure whether that one is available in Israel.

Make it yourself. Get the kosher veal, mince it with about 15-20% bread crumbs, salt and pepper.
OK, the bread crumbs arent traditional, but make a WAY better sausage!

Well there's your first mistake, bratwurst is boiled/poached - perhaps a light grilling after to add a bit of flavour/crispiness to the casing, but they're not grilled from scratch.
(You cook it right in the sauerkraut adding the wurst a bit later, gets that more authentic flavour and it somewhat takes the edge off the kraut - you may actually get to like the kraut if done so.)

Funny, I just learned about this recently from a YouTube video. I either just boiled them, or grilled them, but not both.
So, the next time I cook them, I will boil them mostly, and then finish them off on the grill, as I do like the grill aspect very much.

He's referring to a type of knackwurst; a hotdog-like wurst that is boiled, and which some people refer to as a bratwurst.
The pig-intestine filled with minced meat and herbs is the stuff you throw on a grill, and what most people will expect. The latter one does not combine as good with sauerkraut as the first does.

Yeah, a weiner as the yanks call it, processed pig meat, turned into a slurry really, then boiled.
Not a brat wurst, which has to be gebratten. (if that is the past participle)

Gebraten is indeed the past thingy, and while even many Germans will associate it with "braten" (to pan-fry) that is not the origin of the name.

Thats BS. Pure and simple. I think he said it comes from 'bread'. Yes, we add bread crumbs to ours, as stated elsewhere. But brat is from braten. A roast, fried sausage.
And since English stemmed form german, why the hell would germans use an english word for 'bread' (when they have their own, brot) anyway?
