Maybe I'm old school, but I still prefer individually installing them. To me, the stuff these "take care of everything for you" packages do simply adds extra clutter on top of what you have to learn to work with anyway. So now, not only do you need to learn Apache for instance but you also have to learn what the XAMPP project did with Apache.
It's like a convenience store, their prices are a bit higher. You always pay for convenience in form or another. In this case it's when something goes wrong and having no idea where to look for a problem.
Anyway, just my two cents. It took me forever to embrace NPM and I'm still on the fence about using NuGet willy nilly without a care to the wind. So you know my bias.

It was suggested by the devs. May be they thought I'm too old or lazy to install things by myself. I don't like the bundle-wearez too. And I specifically watch out for hidden tickmarks & autoselected options during the installation wizard.

Hi All,
Beign that I am of the if it doesn't stop me I will live it attiude, I appear to have dropped someone in it unintentionally. The person in question is an OK guy but... he didn't show up Friday after I had cleared the deck to give him a hand... got a little bothered by that (he didn't phone, email, Hipchat, send smoke signals) so wasted a day (it was POETS day after all, so I did). I just feel bad for the guy that I started the where is X and someone from training came looking for him and my Boss who was working from home. Sorry for the long post

It is not hard to phone or mail, and it is his own responsibility. And yes, you can easily find two minutes to send a mail that you're late (or otherwise unavailable for the day).

And it serves him right if this came to the attention of the boss, the cavalry, the Mafia and the Salvation Army, who are all now looking for him.

If you hire someone to paint your house and that person sends you a bill for work while not even being there - how would you react, as a "boss" yourself? Simply pay for a days work?
I'm pretty sure you'll be understanding in case of emergencies or fire, and less so if there is no reason given.

Well, actually I had that. Twice. The same guy. I did not send the MP after him. Instead I first called the police and hospitals along his usual way to work and eventually found him. Both times he had proven himself to be a master at getting into absurd driving accidents.

The first time I met him, he was still dressed up like Donald Duck and greeted me with a snappy 'Good morning, petty officer, sir!". For a second I wondered if they had made me drunk the night before and then dragged me onto a ship.

probably knew the boss was not coming in so he decided to quietly take the day himself.
I do that quite often too, then again I'm my own boss.

So when you know you will not come in, you decide not to show-up - sometimes?
Skipper: We'll fix it.
Alex: Fix it? How you gonna fix this?
Skipper: Grit, spit and a whole lotta duct tape.

Sounds like a management problem. You are not management correct? And management now knows about the issue?
So not your problem.

My good old GeForce GTX 570 got smoked. The fan died silently and immediately something onboard overheated and died as well. Once it was the best you could get, now it's a zombie. Booting with the normal drivers ends in a bluescreen, but using it as an oldfashioned VGA with standard drivers still works, kindof.
Time for a new one. What is the current Nvidia chipset?

The TITAN Xp[^] I think.
But ... you may have to check your PSU ratings ... it uses 250W all on it's own ... and take out a mortgage ...

Could pay that out of my piggy bank, just like the T-Rex 500 I got last week when I got my new used car. But let's not go overboard. The GTX 1070 looks good.

Quite possibly - but it's still silly money for a graphics card that will be out of date in a couple of months...
