In the address bar, type cmd then press enter. Does this still open the command window in the current directory?

Yes, it does! I've never heard of that trick before. I wish I had know that years ago. Thank You.

Now please don't tell me that has been there since Windows 95.

It's been there for a long time. If I'd realised people didn't know this trick, I'd have posted it a long time back.

That has been there since Windows 95... oops, sorry!

This doesn't work if you are browsing a UNC location - it defaults back to C:\Windows

Indeed, but that's down to a failure to properly support UNC paths in cmd. I believe there's a registry hack to get UNC support in cmd, but I can't be 100% certain that it works properly.

Oh, if only they had known about pushd "%~d0" - if they'd used that in the right way in the command file, it would have worked.

I'm pretty sure the subsets of people who cared about WTF the script was doing, and those capable of finding that fix via Google were non-overlapping sets.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, weighing all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

I'm kind of confused as to why you view this as a problem. I've been using PS in lieu of cmd for ages and haven't looked back.

There would be at least a couple of reasons:
1. PS window is formatted differently by default - different font, etc
2. PS obviously runs powershell which in many instances I don't need because I am simply attempting to run console commands.
3. console commands such as dir work entirely differently, for example dir /s does not work dir /p etc.
EDIT
Just noticed that the path command also doesn't work.
So I'm assuming there are ways to do all these things in PS and I will definitely eventually learn them. Just some things I've used for over 20 years now and are second nature. However, I understand progress -- if it really is progress.

You must be really missing the POKE 53280, and POKE 53281 from the C64 days for changing the border and screen colour.....

That is what I did.
Actually did that several versions ago although it might have already been there with shift right click and I just didn't know.

I found that 'like' didn't cover it for me. I had to have it. I took me about an hour doing my normal work before I realized that any normal idiom was not going to work for me.

Right click on desktop
Select "Personalize"
Click "Taskbar"
Turn off "Replace Command Prompt with Windows PowerShell" (About 7 items down.)

Great stuff. Thanks very much.
Edit
Oh, just checked that. My Start menu is still showing command prompt.
The issue I'm talking about is when you shift / right-click in Windows Explorer on a folder.
It used to allow you to open a command prompt window that was focused on that folder.
Someone else has given the workaround -- type cmd<enter> in the Explorer navigation bar.
