I've had to add a comment to his reply telling him that he has been unhelpful.

I just don't know what to think of him. Does he just cat carried away? Does he have to say 'well, actually' to everything and everybody? Or is he just after points by posting comments all over?

There is a huge ~40% gap between the "top experts".
bonus systems always run at a certain point into a complete nonsense direction. I know a lot of forums who already deactivated the count of posts. That helps most times.

Well, I'm not really after points, so I just keep my nose out of there from now on and he can go on as if he owned Q&A

Not sure I and the others would want this. But if this happens, I pity the other people who ask questions there and are given solution that may seem to be the correct one. I really don't like his way of making comments on Q&A, from an asker's point of view.

This is the problem when something like this gets going, it disrupts the community and people will stop contributing or even coming to the site.

I've seen this morning that he has new comments to OP's question. Man, I really don't know how to react after reading them. Go check it quick.
Keith Barrow wrote: people will stop contributing
I'm saddened that some people have already confirmed that they've gone out of Q&A because of him/his comments. Those people may even have better answers than him. If those geniuses will stop contributing, I bet CP Q&A will start to suck.

I saw his replies earlier today, he really doesn't want/like his views challenged. I found his comments on this this[^] answer being pretty rich, seeing as often his reply is just a re-iteration of stuff that has already been said. I used to work with someone like this, at least here I can just choose not to engage.

I had to reply to his comments as well as it seems he's suggesting that following requirements is a bad idea.

Actually, as I said to Keith, nothing personal with this post. I just wanted to solicit advices/ideas on how I can better improve my answers in Q&A. See my answer[^]. Oops. I told you it was nothing personal.

Funny, I've answered where his answer obviously totally misunderstood the question and when I pointed it out, he said I was right and 5'd my answer.

One can always provide a better approach.
It will be a good learning for the OP as well as all others answering the question, so it would be beneficial for all.

The QA is flooded with morons who don't want to learn, they want code they can copy and paste. I've spent some time there recently and I note that if I tell someone the right way, and someone else gives them a copy and paste solution, no matter how I explain why it's not ideal, they get voted as the answer.
My advice is to tell people enough that they can work out a solution, if they want to learn. I am less motivated by points than I am by the idea that if I help someone, it's because they want to learn, not just to take on programming jobs, then ask us to do them.

Too many people ask for full solutions. Sometimes it's a language thing and when you engage, you find out they're more sincere than they first seemed, so in those cases, I try to work with people. But, I almost never give a copy and paste solution. I give the sort of answers I wanted when I was learning, the sort where I'm told where to look, and go off and teach myself something new.

Just curious. Suppose OP is aware of the other approaches to his problem but decides to stick to his approach, would you try to help him with his approach right away, or would you ask him first why that was his approach?

I always ask, I often start with 'why do you want to do that', because, frankly, esp if the OP is not an English speaker, odds are good that they don't know how to program, and the question they are asking, does not solve their problem in the manner they expect. For example the answer to the question 'how do I disable the back button in the browser' is 'you don't, you fix your code'.

I think what you did is fine. I think SAK crosses the line in criticisms of other answers all the time though, and has basically driven me out of QA with his nonsensical posts to "view his answer" every single time he answers anything.

No. Go back. If all of us are going out of QA and let him dominate it, what do you think the quality of the answers will be? We can always ignore him and his egoistic comments.
