I'm not an Android guy so I'm not exactly sure what this really means but...
Looking at the CHUWI HI12 specifications that Mark linked (and you apparently bought) it says "No" for "Google Play (Android Market)".
Doesn't that mean you'll have the same situation on it as well?

That tablet isn't the one he's talking about. That will be a few weeks getting to him. He ordered an Amazon Fire from memory to tide him over till the good one gets there.

Yes, I realize that. I'm just wondering if he'll have the same problem with the "good" one when it's booted to Android.

No, that just means that you don't get constantly nagged to update the (useless and space-consuming) google play app, which went from "useful" (at 23MB) to WTF is better?, (at 470 Mb).
If you think google* is your friend, you're out of your mind.

OG seemed to think Chrome (under Android) required at least some part of the Google Play store. How will that work if Google Play is missing?
As for trusting Google (or Apple or Microsoft)... at a certain point (short of writing your own OS and every single app and service) you have to trust somebody to at least some extent or life becomes pretty challenging.

From what I can tell, all the google play app does for you is nag you about updates, and connect with google servers to log scores in games you play.
Once it's installed, you can't remove it, and it keeps getting bigger and bigger (without seeming to do anything worth doing).
You can reduce its ridiculous size by "downgrading" it to the factory-installed version, after which it nags you on start-up that none of your apps will work unless you update it -- but that's BS, because they do all work. And you still get notifications about updates.
It can probably be installed from the play store, anyway, if a person enjoys bloatware.
And no, I've never trusted google or apple at all, and I've been battered, over the last few years, into not trusting microsoft.
Is that a problem?
Do you trust banks or insurance companies to look after your interests and make good decisions? You don't have to trust the @rseholes who run a company, to use its products.

Nope - the version I ordered (now out of stock again) says:
Quote: Product Notes:
1. Download your favorite apps through the Google Play Store or Market installed.
I suspect it's a Chinese / English translation problem in the original site.
Bad command or file name. Bad, bad command! Sit! Stay! Staaaay...

I had a similar experience when I got my Amazon Fire last December (on special for only $39).
Anyways, I really wanted google docs since I have a bluetooth keyboard and all my stuff is in google docs and I wanted to be able to go anywhere (coffee shop etc.) and open up google docs and write.
I was able to get APKs off a running simulator transfer them over and sideload onto the Fire.
I can't believe it but it's been working for over a year now. I never tried to get Chrome working on there though. I just accepted Silk. Good luck.

You've got i backwards. It's a Google thing to cripple the competition. Drinking their koolaid is all or nothing; if you want to replace even one piece of their proprietary crap you can't include any of it. That includes play services and all of google's apps; and without play services most 3rd party apps won't work either anymore. It's not a bug, it's a feature.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

I remember when GalaSoft first came out. Small, easy to use, easy to maintain. I just downloaded the source for the latest version. OMG! What he calls "Light" isn't anything close to "light" any more.
So, does anyone know of an alternative to GalaSoft Messenger?

You do realise that there's so much code because he is catering for multiple platforms don't you? The code for the WPF version is still straightforward. Just use NuGet to install it and job done.

Sorry, I've been working too long as a network techie, so for me a Catalyst is a Cisco Catalyst switch. Old sh*t, and probably not relevant to your question...
And by the way, why aren't *technical* questions banned in the Lounge as well as *coding* questions. Or is it? Long time since I read the rules, sorry...
