Easy: They LETTUCE live because we don't MEAT their dietary standards.
As well, they don't eat processed foods, either, because CAN-NIBBLES they are not.

If there are any here...
Anyway, direct petrol injection engines. I have one. So like a diesel the fuel is injected direct into the combustion chamber. Since the engine ventilation pipe connects to the inlet tract, so engines fumes are burnt, you get quite a lot of oily gack sucked into the engine. With a normal injection system, this is washed by fuel and doesn't build up on the backs of the valves, with a direct injection system....
Well, a pic says a thousand words: http://www.alfamanservices.co.uk/news1.php[^]
So given the car was running like crap, I pulled the inlet system off, and lo and behold, big gunk build ups. I got some CRC valve cleaner from the US, and with a good scrape around cleaned each valve in turn (making sure they were close, so the crap didn't get into the cylinder).
And the result is different engine completely. Now it has throttle response, is willing to rev, and has crisper feel all over.
So if you have a GDI engine, and its done more than 30k miles, you might need to get it cleaned.

I have a Ford with the 3 CYL 1L Ecoboost engine. Ford say that clever software has eliminated this problem, we shall see.

Isn't that what VW said about their Diesels?

Well, that piece of SW indeed works.

Was the oil in that engine changed on a regular basis as per the manufacturer's recommendations?

Sounds like you need a catch can. It plugs into the breather tube on the valve cover and "catches" oil mist, causing it to accumulate in the catch can instead of on your valves. It has nothing at all to do with the type of fuel injection implemented on your engine.
And this is a common problem, even in Fords. No amount of "clever software" is going to fix this.

Yeah, that's what I will be doing, and yes, it has everything to do with it being GDI, have a read up on the net about it, its caught a lot of manufacturers out.

I've read a bit too this morning, the recommendation is to use bursts of wide open throttle, which I do all the time cos its fun. So that may prevent this issue in my case

Peter Capaldi.
What does everyone make of him. I must say I'm quite disappointed. Not sure if it's because he is following Matt Smith, who was great, but he just seems a bit boring. I expected so much better from him.
