Our school cross country course was [0] about 3 miles, [1] went past my front door and [2] used the woodlands I'd played in since I was 4.
Needless to say I never stopped at home for a can of coke and some bikits, and then rejoined the rest near to the finish.

School cross country running is something that people are only ever made to do, never something anyone wants to do. I don't understand why it's on any PE curricula.

I've driven cross country many time, had a few cross country relationships but never ran cross country. Can't even run cross street.
