That has also been considered over here but would probably lead to the chaos that some other countries go through where they never have a proper majority government.

US has some rather sketchy voting history.
We have a quote from Chicago politics "Vote early and often", Al Capone, Mayor Daley
In Texas, LBJ got some his votes from deceased voters.

I've heard that argument a lot, "I don't like the current government, but I like the alternatives even less!"
Fact is, the party you'd like to like, but currently don't, isn't delivering, but the party you love to hate doesn't get a chance.
So the current course obviously isn't working and the alternative may surprise you (if you'd give it a chance).
By the way, it's like that everywhere.
We've had our elections a few months ago and this week we finally got a new prime minister (after fourteen years!).
People were fed up with the government and decided to vote something else.
France did the same.
Italy and Slovakia too, a while back.
Mostly "eXtrEMe nAzI RiGht!!1" (if the media/left is to be believed).
Whether they're left, right, nazi, populist, or all of the above, they all have two things in common: they're anti-immigration and EU-skeptic.
It's almost as if the voter is trying to say something
And while politics are pretty bad everywhere (at least in Europe), America takes the cake.
Man, that's bad! (or maybe is more appropriate, at this point I don't even know anymore).

You are right of course, but at my age I have seen most of the possible alternatives in this country. And the only one I liked was swept away by the "liberal" left after a few years. Interestingly, a so-called moderate has just been elected President of Iran. And France have their deciding vote tomorrow. As the old Chinese curse says, "may you live in interesting times".

Japan declares victory in 'war' on floppy disks[^]
I had no idea anyone was still using them (or that any still worked!) let alone that a government agency would require submissions on them. I haven't even had a floppy disk drive in any computer this century, and use the A: drive for network storage.

Still used, especially in military and industrial production.

That'll be fun ... the last manufacturer of floppies (Sony) stopped production back in 2011 ...
And the ones I bought when I still used them definitely had a "shelf life" before they degraded beyond the point of readability!

Some small manifacturer still exists, plus Verbatim still makes them.
Not a sustainable solution long term but you know how pachyderms move... slow and ponderously until sh** hit the fan then it's a mad rush trampling everything in their path.

I have gotten a floppy drive that connects to the USB port.

When the last company I worked for shut down (and hardware was going to get thrown out), I was given the opportunity to salvage whatever I wanted. One of our salesguys, in the laptop bag he left, had an external floppy drive, interfacing through USB.
It's the only floppy drive I still have to this day. I have used it, and it still worked when I last tried.

I remember reading years ago that Japan was still very much committed to floppy disks, but were trying to move away from them. That, and fax machines.
Moving data, 1.44MB at a time...can you imagine this in 2024?

On the positive side, it ensures that all submissions must fit in 1.44MB.

I just got a SMS to say that they would be delivering a parcel to me between 07:24 and 10:24 today - which is fine, I understand the need for a reasonably sized delivery window.
Only thing is that it's 08:50 now, so the message is telling me that they could deliver the parcel an hour and a half ago ...
I guess it's better than the usual message "We'll update the tracking once we've delivered the parcel" which is all they give you once they have received it into their system. Just not much. Computer systems don't seem to be their fortΓ© - Horizon anyone?

I had a parcel coming via FedEx "Express" a couple of weeks ago. They said it would be delivered on Friday before 10pm, which was fine. About 3 'o'clock Friday afternoon they sent an email saying it would now be delivered the following Monday before 10pm; OK, they don't work weekends. On Monday morning I received an email saying it would now be delivered on Tuesday before 10pm. Well, Tuesday we were off to the Cornwall for a few days so I had to redirect it to a local collection point. Tuesday morning I got a message confirming that it would be delivered to said point, on Wednesday! When I arrived at the hotel later on Tuesday and checked my email I discovered it had been delivered that day (Tuesday) before we left home. Fortunately it was nothing urgent.

I needed a part to sort out a telly problem in our social club. I would imagine the parcel ought to be small enough to go through a letter box. So I told them to deliver it there, rather than come to me first.
I also included full details of opening times in the delivery instructions section.
Yesterday's "We attempted delivery" message was timed at 7:05pm, when the Club was open.
So how exactly can you fail to deliver to an open boozer when even the lamest of buffoons must be able to see the lights on the the people inside?
Do delivery drivers perhaps have some vampire blood and are unable to cross the threshold unless invited?

I can kinda understand that - if you get filmed going into a boozer in delivery uniform and then driving away, Tiktok isn't going to assume you were dropping off a small parcel!

My mail delivery folks are notorious in my household for not delivering packages because "unable to access house" when I live in a house 1) without a fence, 2) on a public street, and 3) the front door is 15 feet of unobstructed grass from the public sidewalk.
Lazy sod just doesn't want to say they skipped this part of their delivery route, so they make up an excuse.

I see that all the time. Seems like it shouldn't be that hard to substitute the earliest time with the current time if it's in the past, even if only so it doesn't look so dumb.
That, and the weather forecast saying the high's gonna be 24 today, but also reporting it's currently 27. Why not take a chance and report the high as 27 then...?
[Extended rant]
Is there any other job that allows you to be so wrong, so often, and yet remain employed?
I'd love to see someone collect weather forecast data and how it gets revised over time, and then after the fact, compare what was forecast with what you actually got, and plot a graph showing the deviation over time.
"They" keep saying forecasts are now more accurate than ever. I don't believe that for an instant, and I'd more readily believe forecasts were more accurate "back in the day" (whenever that might be).

I often get "proof of delivery" notices that state "handed to Derek" and a photo of my house ( taken from the street, not even from the front garden). This usually happens when I'm away for the weekend. Fortunately the guy that does this actually leaves things in the side passage (behind the door) as requested.... π
