I've been noticing that when I order (always over $25 to get the free shipping), the checkout page always has the expensive shipping as pre-selected. Obviously, the idea is for unsuspecting folks to accidentally pay for shipping.
Another thing I've noticed (although this is marketing, not website design) is a lot of stuff priced exactly $24.99. Fortunately, there always seems to be something stupid that obviously hasn't been moving that they are trying to get rid of that costs about $1.

We have Prime (about $107 per year) which gives us Prime Video and free next day shipping (on most items).
This is handy: I bought two mains plugs yesterday from Amazon rather than drive to the shops to buy them for the same price ... they'll be here this morning.
I have noticed that they do try to get you to put things on a scheduled monthly delivery rather than a one off purchase though.

... and of course you really need two mains plugs a month until forever.

We always make sure to select "same day" shipping when it's available. Make them work for their money!

What's perhaps more evil is that consumers now expect cheap products and free shipping, however the products ain't cheap and the shipping ain't free!
Someone is getting a really bad deal out of this (but probably just profitable enough to not turn it down) and I don't suspect it's Amazon.
It's probably for those who'd rather have something than nothing, but it's probably no fair pay.
But whatevs, you get your cake and eat it too (and then complain on the interwebs)

I have Amazon Prime (same benefits Griff mentioned), so your issue is not an issue for me. I wouldn't say their website design is evil as much as it is geared to make $$$. If money is truly evil to you, then I can see why you feel that way. I don't think money is evil. I think people can be evil.
However, I "try" to be a conscientious buyer and I almost always take the longest delivery time they offer.
As much as I love the convenience of Amazon shopping, I am appalled by the scandals and the working conditions a lot of the employees have to endure.
I want my purchases to show up soon, but I don't want anyone breaking their back to make that happen.
I agree with others, the constant herding buyers into a monthly auto-subscription is a PITA. I am currently only using this on one item, and it is a medical accessory item for my diabetes that I need every month.

I think you you check you'll discover the option you get is always for the fastest shipping. I've noticed this on other sites as well and it's always for the fastest shipping.
Personally I frequently grab the slowest shipping at Amazon so I can build credit for music and ebook purchases, which I use heavily.

From the comments:
Wonder how long it took to render all the frames and what hardware is was rendered on.
About 2 weeks rendering all up, on a 16C/32T CPU. I wouldn't try it on my old Amaiga 500.
I didn't see him mention anything about what math library or program was used, but I didn't peruse all of them, either.

Wow
2 weeks, 16 cores, ?? GHz... That's an eye-watering number of cpu-cycles.
Thanks for posting this, the thread's been fun.

Today I and Herself fetched our grandson from school. He complained he was dizzy and not feeling well. He coughed and sneezed in the car, although he was wearing a mask. He had a mild fever.
His father rushed him to the doctor and he tested positive for Covid. He is only nine and was too young to be vaccinated, although all adults in our family are fully vaccinated. But we are all under quarantine for two weeks. Now comes the long wait to see him recover and to see if anyone else in the family shows symptoms.
This virus really sucks big time!

He'll probably be fine in a few weeks - the young generally are - but I'm really sorry to hear that your family has it. It's pretty nasty.
Welcome to the wonderful world of Lateral Flow Tests, I assume - I've been doing them twice a week for ages and they still trigger my gag reflex every time ...

I've been feeling a temperature that is a bit high and with some dizziness, but that is due to the humid heat dome I'm currently in.
As for COVID, I believe that I had caught it in May 2020. The symptoms presented themselves as gastrointestinal distress, especially in the form of the highest specific impulse loose bowels I've ever had. (Rocket scientists here will understand this terminology. )
