(Because ultimately I suspect FaceBook, google etc would block access to their sites by French users before setting a precedent of paying a ridiculous tax like this. If France keeps this up they'll find themselves shut off to the modern world as companies refuse to talk to them anymore.)

Quoting one of my sister-in-law's teachers; she went to an elementary school run by a fundamentalist Christian church. The teacher was actually commenting on some historical event where France was less than cooperative with the U.S.

Google will then charge the French government for "Search results" and Facebook can charge for providing "posts from Friends" - or just pull the plug on the French and knock 'em back to the dark ages.
