Yesterday night someone broke into our house wich we're currently rebuilding.
It isn't hard to get in as there are no windows or doors yet, but lots of our gear was in a locked case and our property is closed with fences indicating no unauthorized access.
They cut the lock from the case and stole all our electrical equipment (drills, grinding wheel, saws, ...) a few hundred euros worth.
If ever I catch who done it I go Gordon Freeman on their ass, not with one of these[^], but one of these[^]
People should not take what isn't theirs, f[BEEP] bastards.
([ANTICLIMAX]treath not to be taken seriously, I'd probably call the police[/ANTICLIMAX])

So you leave expensive equipment laying around in an unsecured building and wonder why it was nicked?

Bunch of sunshines!
Some people will steal anything: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-20143301[^]
And even if they are caught, they get twenty minutes "community service" or a free Holiday in Africa if they do it often enough. Makes you sick.
If you get an email telling you that you can catch Swine Flu from tinned pork then just delete it. It's Spam.

Yep, if you're going to leave powertools on a building site they need to be in a VERY secure box. Not one with a lock or chain that can be cut.

Of course they don't, but ask any builder if they leave their tools onsite and they'll laugh.

They may not have the right, but they will still take it.
That is why we have the word "Criminal".

Criminals steal things? Really? I always thought it was the word for people who write the worst possible code!

What is really odd, is that if you call the police they will laugh too. But if you set up a deer blind and shoot the thiefs in the night, you go to jail? Doesn't make any sense.

Yeah... and also suggest him to insure the tools. And insure VERY secure box also. And make sure that box is such that it can't be moved from the site. And he probably would need GPS tracking of the box in case thieves do manage to move the box.
Just saying.

Used airbags from scrapped cars make wonderful booby traps.
Note that I'm not telling you to make one, certainly not, that would be illegal.
People say nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day.

I like your way of thinking.

You should have put them in an invisible shed[^]
Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends.

Perhaps they weren't stolen, perhaps someone broke in and placed them in an invisible shed that was already on site.

Do invisible sheds need planning permission?

In my area (Chicago) this sh*t ends up at the flea markets and craigslist. Checking for people selling it in person can be a bitch, but check websites / ebay, etc.
Do you have people hired to do work? It seems like it could be an inside job.
