It's also a way to reduce carbon emissions by your employees, given they can live and work in close proximity and don't need to commute.

Work from home and eliminate the commute altogether.

So now the new era for work would be company changed to company based towns
|
|
|
|
|
Not the first, nor will it be the last: Port Sunlight - Wikipedia[^], Toyota, Aichi - Wikipedia[^]
Then there were Company Towns[^] which went even further: owning the residences, shops, bars, theaters, brothels - and paying in company scrip that can only be spent there. A form of slavery in many cases: you couldn't earn enough "real money" to ever leave.

I'm always surprised how many people don't know about company towns. It goes back to the era where towns were built around mining spots. The fun part is even if they do pay you in real money, because they control the local economy your effective income is whatever they want it to be.

I do know about those, but learned that they forced to stop the practice as it was almost(?) slavery...

Hey man - the military's been doing it like this for years, and it works pretty good. As a Google employee, the only time you would need to worry is when they give you a uniform and a rifle, and ask you how you feel about jumping out of 'planes.

My son (He is 12) told me yesterday evening he could not print anymore from his laptop on our Wifi printer.
After spending 15min to check why the printer decided to keep putting itself in "suspended" mode, I saw that the MSOffice 2016 version that I installed somehow had "upgraded" to what seems to be a pre-step to 365 - For the lucky ones who do not know Office 365, it is a POS whose main goal is to try making Lotus Notes not be the worst software in the world anymore.
Anyway, this update converted the default saving directory to, guess what... a cloud directory. Which means that Office was at the same time trying to access the document on the cloud and trying to send it to the printer on the same network, which confused the printer. Saving the document locally solved the problem.
And now I have to check how to remove this "almost" 365 version and how to ditch all this cloud thing. I DO NOT WANT MY DOCUMENTS TO BE IN THE CLOUD. Stop trying forcing that on me over and over again with trick updates, Microsoft, and by reactivating your sh*tty OneDrive.

From what I understand, Office 365 and 2016 ARE the same, but with different settings.

Office 365 is web based. 2016 is a desktop program.

Office 365 is a licensing pattern, while good old 2016 is pay-once-use-forever...
It is true that the actual software installed on your PC is exactly the same, but it behaves differently with different licenses...
Office 365 has a browser based version (which is free), that less feature rich and uses exclusively the cloud as storage...

OK, this means that I only know the browser based version of 365 - it is the one used at my workplace, when editing sharepoint documents. Indeed cloud based. But the behaviour is similar to what I have now on my son's laptop.

Interesting... We, too have Office 365 at work, but never thought to use browser based version... It is hard enough to use the desktop based...

I have been moved to office 365 at work. Still using Office 2016 locally installed, but only as front-end software. All back-end stuff is managed by office 365, and that... in corporate environment.
Not sure how long it will take for this to explode us in the nose, but since IT was moved to sales...
At home still happily using Office 2010. I know one or two things that annoy me a bit are solved in office 2016, but I don't find it worth enough to upgrade.
