Daniel Pfeffer wrote: my wife had to figuratively beat me over the head before I realized that when she complained about her day, she wanted sympathy, not solutions
That's so simple, yet tremendously insightful. If I commiserate to somebody else, typically it's because I'm fishing for solutions, as I have very little practical use for sympathy. Whereas if I have a solution, then that means in the future I can proactively work at avoiding altogether whatever got me down in the first place. Wanting sympathy, but not looking for solutions, simply means the situation will be repeating itself.
That's the problem-solver in me speaking.

my $0.02
Caveat: just completed 59 years. Great, if not perfect, life. Would do it again. I think, though, I would have my grandchildren first, they are more fun than children.
I think you could add some legal ramifications.
Yes, in most, if not all parts of this country, you can coexist without marriage.
I told my daughters that doing so could significantly reduce their options if the coexist partner walks out leaving them behind.
If you can keep your head while those about you are losing theirs, perhaps you don't understand the situation.

That doesn't sound like any problem to be solved, neither within nor without marriage.
But take a problem such as snoring, keeping the partner awake. Through true love, you learn to handle that. And when you repeatedly hear your partner bitching about your terrible snoring to her friends, your anger over that is handled the same way: Through true love.
If you live by yourself, there is no partner getting angry from your snoring, and you do not get angry from hearing her complaining over you. So there is less true love exercized, but the problem is avoided.

There was a saying in England :: "many a true word is said in jest.".

Marriage is a statement of commitment. This is why we invite lots of people to attend and generally make a big deal about it.
And the reason why the commitment is important is because it is intended to provide stability. If you find that there isn't stability; that one or both of the partners is cheating or abusing or an addict or whatever, then it makes sense to withdraw the commitment.
But stability is important, and highly valued, because it provides a basis for raising a family, getting and providing an education, saving, making a home; all those things that society is based on.
Obviously, that is the ideal, and not the reality for lots of people. And the difference between the ideal and the reality has always been with us, and was not an invention of the sixties or birth control, as some would have it. Otherwise, Moses could have come down from the mountaintop with at least one less commandment.
And yes, you can build a great life and have a great future without the commitment. But generally speaking, it makes it easier to survive the inevitable rough stretches.
As for jokes, I've found that my marriage has been much much better since I learned to laugh at our minor and normal issues. And maybe that's another reason for marriage jokes; the problems are something of an experience we all go through and it is a good way to share?

Best advice I was ever given was to stop chasing fine pieces of ass and find someone I truly respect.
I married a girl a bit older than me, an intellectual equal if not smarter than me, makes more money than I do and morally grounded without being a prude. We did date for 6 years, so I do still advocate for an extended debugging phase to make sure the final product is production ready

I gotta say, this little computer does quite a good job as a HTPC. I'm using a 4gb Pi 4, with a 32gb Samsung thumb drive, and installed the latest version of LibrElec. For control, I'm using a Logitech universal remote.
I've been testing it for a few days on a 20-inch monitor, and it performs well enough for me to try it on the big 75-inch TV ion the living room. This will be replacing a
I found that installing Kodi on top of Raspbian caused the box to get much warmer than using LibrElec.
BTW, I have the Pi in a Wicked Aluminum billet case from Barch Designs. It's a passive cooling case that completely encloses the Pi. The entire case serves as a heat sink, but I feel like it needs additional cooling because it gets very warm to the touch when running an actual desktop OS.
All in, I've spent about $175 on this little box - a significantly lower amount than I spent on my full-sized HTPC box (hovering right around $750).
BTW, Raspberry just released an 8gb version of the Pi4 for $75 (last Thursday), and I already have one. I bet it's gonna make a decent daily computer for the wife...
I have also applied all of the hardware updates, as well as applied the beta USB boot eeprom.

Got a Pi 4 doing same, although ATM I am using it to dip my toes into the Blazor waters. I have one of the clear cases with a fan ($10), included heat sinks and runs very cool. I am using an old Samsung 28"monitor. Mostly, I just connect via tightvnc. Only problem with that stuff is that it is a black hole where I throw time. Spent a bunch of time with a project using temp sensors via I2C stuff. Another was running a syslog server.

All they really have to do is finish the boot over ethernet and boot from USB, and enable video hardware acceleration.

#realJSOP wrote: enable video hardware acceleration
That'd make it a non-starter, I guess, for a home theater.
I was going to ask how well it performed with HEVC-encoded videos, but if it doesn't have video hardware acceleration, that sorta answers my question.
(HEVC aka H.265 aka "the 4K codec"...which doesn't necessarily only apply to 4K-resolution videos...I've seen 1080p and 720p videos reencoded with it, and file sizes benefit significantly. But unsurprisingly, any HEVC video - even at the lowest resolution - proves to be too much for the decade-old Nvidia Ion-based system I currently use with my projector.)

Nope, it works fine without it (no stutter, no lag). I might make 4k better, but I have no 4k content (or H.265 for that matter), so no harm no foul for me.
Of course, I haven't tried it on "the big tv" yet, but I don't anticipate a problem at this point.

Right. Even though I have no 4K content yet, I do run across H.265-encoded content every once in a while, so I was wondering if that box might be able to handle it. I guess the answer to that, specifically, is still unknown.

PLAINTIVE = Mournful
PLAIN = Unadorned

TI E = Formal Neckware
Bit embarrassing to mention this, but right up until now I thought "plaintive" was the legal term (Plaintiff)
Never heard the word to mean mournful before.
