Why? It wastes the "title bar space" that tabs occupy, and - certainly on my system (Win10 + Chrome) - the "active page" tab is highlighted: White instead of a Blue background.

This[^] is what you get with firefox -- and I had to install an extension to put the dark line above the active tab.
It's utterly ridiculous that the tab is attached to the address bar. Have these people never seen real paper with real tabs?

I can - there is a thin area above the tabs, and a "gap" to the right of the "new tab" button which you can click / grab with impunity.

Yeah, loved that at a place I worked where the only option was edge (they had chrome, but I don't consider that to be an option).
Click a picometre too low and you hit the close-tab cross, which you can't see because of the window in front of it.
And the superb piece of cr@p that edge was didn't have an "undo closed tab" option, so I had to go through the history to figure out which one I had closed.

On my monitor, the "Close" button is 4mm high, and there is a 2mm border above that within the tab, and a further 2mm above that (when not maximized) you can click with impunity.
And Chrome has a "recently closed" list in its "History" drop down.
Edge was not a "superb piece of cr@p": There was nothing superb about it, it's sole use was to download Chrome or Firefox ...

It's similarly highlighted in both FireFox and WaterFox -
I've never had the problem so I never noticed (highlight is more extreme as a link, visually than the lack of a border).
On the other hand, I understand the illogic you bring up. For a custom tabbing page at work, my users see highlighted connected tabs. Again, I leave as little to chance as possible when "users" are involved.

I saw your screenshot on the other post and the problem is your theme. My firefox and my chrome both are clear which tab is active. Your colors are dulled.

That's "classic" as in pre-XP, with no distracting colours, and no bubbly rounded corners (which make screenshots look like cr@p).

Bur it's as plain as day which page the tab is attached to here[^].
In fact, if tabs aren't attached to pages, they're not even tabs; they're just buttons.

I went with pale moon which fixed a lot of things mozilla broke in ff (fixed or didn't do)
... mostly the < save / quit / cancel > when you close the thing with lotsa tabs open.
I'll admit though my bank doesn't like pale moon, so I installed chrome just for that.
(dislike chrome, not just tabs on top of the address bar but no menu bar because that's "modern".)
after many otherwise intelligent sounding suggestions that achieved nothing the nice folks at Technet said the only solution was to low level format my hard disk then reinstall my signature. Sadly, this still didn't fix the issue!

I used Pale Moon for a while, and liked it a lot (especially the marvellous Speed Start extension, which provides the best start page ever, IMO), but too many pages weren't working in it.
I've just updated it, so I'll give it another go.

Isn't the background of the active tab rendered in a different color than the other ones on your system?
Or are you using that dumb Win10 default setting where all captions, whether active or not, are shown in white so there's no way to tell them apart...?
|
|
|
|
|
It's displayed vaguely lighter, but when you have lots of tabs open (15+ is normal, for me), it's barely noticeable.
The "dumb Win10 default settings" have never been a problem for me (although I think "dumb" is a far too forgiving word, so you're probably a much nicer person than I am). I hack the cr@p out of the registry, to get rid of them.
But it's so bloody illogical, is what gets me. The tab is part of the page -- in the real world, it is physically part of the page -- so attaching it to an address bar makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, and is completely unintuitive.
It makes it into just a horizontal row of buttons that switch between pages that are somewhere else in the window, which is most certainly not good UX -- if you insist on having such buttons, at least align them vertically.

I use the addon "Tree Style Tab". I get a nice, hierarchical list of tabs on the left side. I don't even look at the tabs at the top any more.
I'd post a screen shot, but, I'd have to load the image to a site somewhere to be able to link it and I'm lazy.

Found it. I'll give it a go. If it can be positioned on the right, I'll probably keep it.
[edit]
Indeed it can, so I'll run with it for a few days, and see how it goes.
