The article was mentioned in the insider, but I just had to point out the other piece of news in that article that Kent inadvertently missed.

Might sound laughable at first, but this might be really useful info for scientists.
On a related note. Birds can see the north and south pole, their eyes have magnetic sensors.

a) how do you magnetize a cockroach?
b) even if you can, why would you?
When I was growin' up, I was the smartest kid I knew. Maybe that was just because I didn't know that many kids. All I know is now I feel the opposite.

So you can place a bomb on its back and have it sneak into an enemies nuclear reactor?
I, for one, like Roman Numerals.

Ever met scientist?
Their life seems to rotate around the question: What happens if ____?
Had an acquaintance once that made a doctors degree on "PMS in Cats"

- Didn't you ever magnetize a needle by stroking it against a permanent magnet? (Probably as part of a science project to create a compass)
- They haven't managed to persuade people that cockroaches are tasty and/or make wonderful pets, so they're trying to sell them as fridget magnets?

1. I was under the impression that only worked with certain kinds of metal, notably iron and non-stainless steel.
2. Fair point

Iron is the most common magnetic ore, but IIRC you can also use cobalt, nickel, and some rare Earth elements.
The iron doesn't have to be particularly pure. There is a naturally-occurring iron ore, magnetite, which is magnetized.

Why would you not want to magnetise a cockroach?

because i don't want cockroaches anywhere near me.

So, put a magnet in your neighbours kitchen.

Ummm, I own a duplex and rent half to my neighbors.
I don't want them to have cockroaches, magnetized or otherwise.

I haven't lived here long enough to not like anyone yet. We've been here less than a year.
Adding, there's nobody in the place on the other side of us. They sold it and are gutting it.

The VB6 developer of course, it's an endangered species !

you'd make a sandwich out of a VB6 developer?

Given that I work in Western Digital's flash memory division, I'd say I make a very good sand-witch.

Pastrami, with melted swiss cheese and homemade Russian dressing. All of which I'd have to go to the store to get the ingredients, make the dressing, toast the bread, and make the sandwich.
In other words, the ex and the vb6 developer can both drown!
