Did a few crtl-F5's. Seems Web03 is the culprit. Web01 and Web05 are good.

Say it ain't so, Satya.

Hmmm, who CAN you trust?
If you can keep your head while those about you are losing theirs, perhaps you don't understand the situation.

It tells you if new versions are available, so obviously it has to phone home at least some to do that.

Well, it seems like I put a smiley there.
If I was paranoid, I would just block it at the firewall.
I am NOT paranoid (they really are out to get me). )Another
You guys sure are touchy about this stuff.

I wouldn't use that. Why should I care if MS knows if i have installed VSCode or not. They need to know if it is worth working on after all.
...and why, if you are not the trusting kind, should you trust some random stranger instead?

And?
Do you have any idea how many application send usage data back to their vendors? MS doesn't have a monopoly on this, not even close.

Thanks for sorting that out for us.

Oh I never said it was a good thing. I just said MS wasn't the only one who does it.
I trust companies about as far as I can throw them. Their mantra is "profit at all costs", so they take whatever data they can get and sell it to advertisers or whoever wants it.

So what we need is governance, and privacy laws.
And a few executives sent to prison for breaking those laws fines might be good for the exchequer, but they'll just be considered as running costs, like legal fees.

It's not the update check. I don't have a problem with update checks.
It's the "usage data" that's being sent back.

Dave Kreskowiak wrote: It's the "usage data" that's being sent back. Good point. That offends me just as much. I feel violated when they know that I used their app for 3 hours today.
Seriously, is any of the data they send back confidential? I could be wrong but I don't see the harm in them sending back anything they want (with respect to using their app.)

So, how do you know what they're sending back? What data did the app collect?
Considering Facebook and Google both collect as much data as they can on you, even if you're not users of their stuff!, what is are the apps you DO use collecting?

It's only irrational if you don't try to verify it, understand it, research it, and combat it. The irrational ones just skip all the intermediary steps and go straight to combating it.

Considering government is nearly always made up of those very people, and their lawyers, it's very unlikely that's ever going to happen.

That is pretty much how it works today.
