John Simmons / outlaw programmer wrote: Every time I move the cursor, the editor lights up
EDIT - I came back because I thought OP said 2019. 2017 never had these features for me, but 2019 does and has all kinds of popups. I think OP meant 2019??
I just downloaded and installed it EDIT #### (2019)#### and tried it out too.
It really is over the top.
Check this one out (png) https://i.stack.imgur.com/yw6zj.png[^]
It says, "Light Bulbs like this..." But that is a screwdriver. ???
And stuff is popping up all over the editor.
It has git comments and stuff that pop up in there.
Well, now to find how to turn this stuff off.
These features are the sign of someone who doesn't really understand VStudio who has read a list of features that devs want and has directed their addition.
For example, I've often wanted to know the diff on a file in studio when it tells me something has changed, but not like this. Let me just click a button to see it, don't pop it up every time I move the cursor.

I must be doing something wrong. It works great for me. Then again, I'm left handed so I'm used to being different.

My dad's a leftie, and apparently when I started writing as a kid I was using my left hand also but I'm told someone forced me to "correct" that. I have no such recollection.
All I know is that these days my handwriting wouldn't be much worse if I started using my left hand.

I ain't sayin' it doesn't work - I'm sayin' it's like crap on a cracker as delivered. I'll be playing settings whack-a-mole for a few days, trying to get it so it can't be seen from space.

And I meant I haven't changed any settings and it works great for me. I see a few light bulbs here and there but nothing that bothers me. Maybe if you wrote better code it wouldn't suggest so much?

OP said 2017 but I read it as 2019 because I just installed 2019 and it has those annoying popup features.
I think he meant 2019.
I had used 2017 for many months and it doesn't have those popups. I think OP just said wrong version??

Some of these things have a "don't show this again" option,
and others you have to go into some rules or settings to turn them off.
But it's like swotting flies, as soon as you whack one a couple more turn up.
Dunno who'se behind this crap, but seems the evelotion of vs goes something like:
vs2010 - do a few things but do them pretty well
vs2013 - do a more then a few things, but some only averagely
vs2015 - do even more things, ran out of time (2017 came up) so left half done
vs2017 - do a boat load of stuff but only half- assed, don't fix anything, just add even more
vs2019 - pre-releases / announcements indicate goal is to find out how much that puppy will hold
oh, vscode starting to go down the same path, ... I tried it, I really tried hard, nah.
I'm sure it'll be fine for the hobby devs and some juniors, but for serous work, nah.
When you want a "Swiss army knife" you buy the real thing, not some knockoff. ms and multi-os-multi-language, heck just ms and linux - again maybe fine for beginners but not for anyone with proper ability.

Am I the only one bothered by the frequency of the "releases"?
Are they real improvements? Or are they just Marketing ploys to boost sales?
How much is just fluff and glitz?

Lopatir - you nailed the assessment of the Visual Studio versions. Not to mention that each new version is more cloud connected meaning that the tool is slower with every release as it waits to check in with the mothership at Redmond every time it starts.
I miss the days when everything you needed from an IDE was on your hard drive. IDE, Compiler, Help files, Samples, Etc. Yes help can get stale, but that is the time to connect to the internet not every login.

Notice that things started going sideway when they took away our MDI interface (which happend when they went to WPF for the IDE).

Hey, you were warned that the ms designers and devs who made travesties of windows and ms office would be "working their magic" on VS, so don't sound surprised that it's started turning to sh1t.
And it will get worse before it gets and never get better.

Yes, and unlike all of my Android devices, it still gets regularly patched, despite being "dead" (and Android supposedly leading).
