I agree - but they tend not to be the ones doing the hiring though.

OK - compromise. Use the corkscrew. This also ads a little bit of a poetic element, as well.

That's the point that you inform them that they brought you in for your technical expertise and that you have advised them of the difficulty of the task. Remind them that, when you overrun other tasks because this one has been underestimated, that you will be referring back to the meeting as to the reason why other tasks have not been completed. Send a confirmation email afterwards otherwise they will "forget" that it was their idea.

Worst of it is, I'd love to be given the chance to do the kind of data analysis which would genuinely help them out but they won't hear of it - to much distraction from the 'real' work...

Why do you want to write tests, they don't produce anything and they take time away from the project.
You must work in a financial institution, EVERYthing works on Excel, and what do you mean a database is not a spreadsheet, everything is a spreadsheet.

Yeah, been there, changing jobs rarely helps this phenomenon. Sadly, its the same almost everywhere.
In such cases, the following provides a laugh and helps preserve some semblance of sanity.

In my own career, one of my favorites was being tasked with designing a single server application with "unlimited capacity". I patiently tried to explain that its not possible to have infinite capacity in the real world...that some resource would always limit capacity.
The response, "You're being unreasonable, I said 'unlimited' not 'infinite'".
I simply sighed and resisted the urge to fetch a dictionary. Days like these are why they invented beer

...that is used for when changing a value on the client UI immediately updates the server. No "Save" button, in other words.
It's not "responsive UI" (that for different screen sizes), it's not "fluent" (that's a coding style thing), but I just can't remember.

If you are referring to client-side scripting that automatically saves upon field(s) change, then I have only known this as "AutoSave". Not much of a buzz word.

Yes, and there's some geeky buzzword for that.

I don't think so. I just spent 15 minutes looking. Doesn't mean it does not exist, but I think it does not exist.
If it did, it is not used anymore.
Auto-save is what Microsoft uses internally (i.e. MS Word, OneNote, etc.) and it is used here in our shop for the exact same thing.
Do let us know when you find the "buzzword" you are looking for.

Only one way, from client to server.
