See the edit to the original post. You got me thinking and I realized there is a common thing going on in the code I'm debugging on both machines.

Strange coincidence...I was playing with low level hooks yesterday. I had an idea for a small application. I thought it might be fun to write an article about it.
Then, I ran into this same problem. I starting thinking about readers running into the problem. I preemptively sensed the blame pursuing me backwards through time.
I decided to pursue a different project

I had the same problem with VS2015. Thinking about this, it's tough problem for MS developers. Program registers global mouse hook, so callback function is called on every mouse event. When the program breaks in the debugger and mouse moves, our callback is called, and everything is stuck.
I think that Windows finally detects problematic function in the hook chain and kicks it off, but this is only my guess.

huh, it's been a long time but I don't recall having that issue 12 or 13 years ago in VS2003 when hooking the mouse and keyboard.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, weighing all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

This has been without doubt the moist incredible spring I have ever seen. Day after day of wall to wall sun, and low to mid 20s temperature. Absolutely amazing! (especially for Devon, we can get a lot of rain off the Atlantic).

You managed to avoid the snow in March then?

No, we had a foot of it, on two occasions, very unusual for Devon. Since mid april though it has been superb here.

So "late spring", then.
We're currently forecast to get rain and thundery showers tomorrow, and all of next week. And it's not even going to bring the sodding temperature down.

Well, if the start of the second third is 'late', then yes.

I thought you were an ex-pat living in France?

Moved back to the UK for a few years. Daughters education. France was a joke. At 13 the 'science' they were taught consisted of watching salt dissolve.

You didn't sell the house in France that you did all the work on, did you?

I've have it on good authority that the UK does not have a south, it's darn sarf.
