My microwave came with not one but two layers of protective film over the keypad. I didn't realize there was a second layer until the last time I wiped down the front of the thing .

Maybe you've inadvertently come across a new product we can manufacture and get rich quick on!
Do it yourself protective-appliance-film. Sell like Avery labels - so we can get people to buy far more than they need because they want them pre-cut. Add it to all the products they wished they could protect. Even a small fraction of the population is millions of customers.
You'd look great in our infomercials! Classic trustworthy salt-of-the-earth type. We'll just add a cowboy hat. Just one thing: please no English accent!
Where in the money! Where in the money! Wheeeeeeeeee!

It's already available, at least for cell phones.
I do like my daughter's story, however. She bought a Galaxy Note 4, and paid for a screen protector for it. Some time later she dropped it, and the screen shattered while the protector remained intact. The protector company gracefully replaced her device, surprisingly enough.

Idiot - this word has some history:
Quote: The word "idiot" comes from the Greek ἰδιώτης, idiōtēs 'a private person, individual', 'a private citizen' (as opposed to an official), 'a common man', 'a person lacking professional skill, layman', later 'unskilled', 'ignorant' from ἴδιος, idios 'private', 'one's own'.[2] In Latin, idiota was borrowed in the meaning 'uneducated', 'ignorant', 'common',[3] and in Late Latin came to mean 'crude, illiterate, ignorant'.[4] In French, it kept the meaning of 'illiterate', 'ignorant', and added the meaning 'stupid' in the 13th century.[5] In English, it added the meaning 'mentally deficient' in the 14th century.[1]
Which meaning does apply?
() None
() Greek
() Latin
() Late Latin
() All of the above

The answer is "Yes" or "No", depending on the interpretation.
An empty set may be a member in a set of sets. If "All of the above" is a set of all the above sets, and "None" is an empty set, then there is no mutual exclusion or other sort of contradicition.

I'm guessing you bought RainX type, because I had the same problem.
And, you noticed really quickly. Mine were streaking for 2 weeks before I noticed.

EDIT
Hahaha - here's the official installation video which shows the installer (very subtly) remove the plastic cover : -- it's way at the end of the video which I cued up for you.

I've bought nothing else for years - they work really well.
The car comes with them as standard (I think - it wasn't new when I bought it) but I'd have swapped to them at some point anyway, they just work so much better.

Mine are even easier than that to fit - they have a "squeezy clip" thing. so you just squeeze and slide. I always had to stop and think about the U-hook type (probably because I don't change blades often).

I was complaining about these supposedly great wipers for two weeks.
Finally I went to take one of them off and adjust it better and that blue cover slipped a bit.
"Ohhhhh....". Slap the forehead.
None of the wipers I've ever bought in 30-odd years of driving have had covers like that.
But maybe that is why these are so good.

Another thing I found a couple of years ago was this: ICEPLANE - New Car Window Ice Scraper[^] - I don't know if you can get them in the states (or even if iced up cars is a problem where you live) but if you can and it is, these are damn good!

Here in southern Ohio we do deal with ice. We get all the seasons at this latitude.
That is a really cool ice scraper innovation. As soon as you see it, it makes sense and you wonder why ice scrapers haven't been made like that before.
Your had is elevated away from the ice and it's more stable and you can scrape in both directions and apply more force. It all makes sense. Very cool.

How much ice do you get? All of the images on their website are what I would consider a heavy frost. There have been times here that I've come out to a solid 5 or 6mm of ice on my windshield.

Depends on which way the wind blows: If it blows up the valley then it's pretty thick (as the sea is at the other end) if it's going down the valley then it's thinner but tougher because it's generally colder.
On a bad day, 5mm is quite possible, but it generally thinner.
This thing doesn't care, it just cuts through - better than all the other scrapers I've tried (and I hate those de-icing sprays, they just leave a layer of crud over the screen).

Had a similar problem with a nostalgic record player I bought recently, when I put the needle on the record first time it swept across to the other side without producing any sound.
After inspecting the needle, it turned out that it had a plastic protection cap on it that had to be taken off

None luckily, narrow escape because it was the beloved "Bread" record of my wife

I've done worse things...the one I'll never forget was trying to swap a lower element in a hot water tank without turning off the water at the meter. I watched a few youtube videos on how to do it, but my experience was very different, mostly due to a plumbing issue with the tank...they put the shutoff valve on the wrong pipe. (out vs. in)

One can be an idiot.
One can also be a victim of an idiot.
When my house was rebuilt after Sandy, I had demand hot water put in. It was a 'condenser' type, which removes heat from the burned gas by condensing water from the combustion. This collects and drips into a container, and if it fills enough, out a small pipe (and into a small bucket).
The plumbers who installed it didn't bother removing the plug closing the overflow exit (it was hidden by a big bright yellow tag telling them to remove it). So - after using it for some days it suddenly stopped working. The overflow detection tripped the interlock.
A quick call to the manufacturer and they asked me to check. Problem solved in a few minutes. Thanking the support person, unscrewing the plug, and mostly, cursing out the plumbers.
