Quote: or cant be bothered to spend the £50.
Why spend £50 on something you'll only ever have any use for once a decade (in most of the UK)?

Thanks for being such a good example of the mentality in Britain I am talking about.
Why indeed spend £50 to stop you from getting stuck, miles from home, in the freezing cold, your car wrecked, or in a ditch. Having to sleep in the freezing cold on a motorway, to be rescued by the police.
Yes, why indeed spend £50. Just isnt worth it is it eh?

If you need something, buy it - the only point I was making is that in the UK snow is only a problem once a decade, if that. For most people it's not worth it - just stay at home.

It is, of course, worth it, even once, to not be a victim of the weather.
And of course if we could all move about as normal in the snow there would be no loss of production, or GDP because of it.
Yes, of course, but the reason why Britain comes to a standstill when 3 inches of snow falls whereas Scandinavia, Canada et al manage with far more, is precisely because it isn't worth us investing money in such rare events. Cheaper to take the loss and just deal with it as and when.
No, it isnt cheaper to take the loss.
I would pay £50 not to be stuck on a motorway without a seconds thought! Let alone putting the car in a ditch/hitting someone etc.

Well I stay at home and have £50 to spend on something else

If you only lose £50 staying home from work, you need a new day job.

I work from home anyway!
Well, as long as you stay put when it's snowing I won't complain...

If you lose money staying home from work, you need better laws.

104 hours/year of paid leave (NOT vacation - those are usually 20 days but need to be planned with the company).
Sick days (if certified by a medic) barely limited (after a certain amount of days pay is reduced though).
Git sum laws!

What's the difference between those days and vacation?

Vacation days cannot be reduced or paid out, and can accumulate for maximum two years then they MUST be used or there is a fine for the employer (and possibly the employee). They must be taken according to plans made together with the company though, so one cannot "take a vacation day" on a whim (usually - many company don't care and allow it anyway). They are counted as days or half days.
Paid leaves are counted in hours or half hours, can be taken mostly anytime with a bare minimum or no notification at all (the latter only on urgent matters). It is possible to take several contiguous days of paid leave if one wants it but they cannot be chained to vacation days. The company may, through contract with the single employee, reduce the number of paid leave hours paying them in the salary, but must aloow for at least 2 hours/month. They pauid leave hours stack and after two years if an employee has not used them they will be paid in the monthly chekc.
Plus there are holidays, which are quite a lot: Christmas, New Year, the day after Easter, May 1st (labourers holiday), June 2nd (Republic celebration), August 15th (Ferragosto) and December 8th (Conception) plus the local protector Saint holiday of the city the office is located.

Like what - since you're not leaving the house?

We have this thing called "The Internet" - try it sometime!

If you can't be bothered to leave home, why shouldn't delivery company employees do the same? :-p

They do, and I'm not complaining. I don't have to leave home, nor do I require anyone else to, in order to spend and enjoy that £50 online, if I want. Or I could save it til another day (when the sun is shining.)

In Italy chains orsnow tires are mandatory, while socks aren't mentioned anywhere and rarely sold. I discovered of their existance only recently. They wear out faster than chains but are a hell lot easier to put on.
I hate winter tires when there is no snow - barely any traction at all and when the road is wet it's like driving on soap.

In the French alps you are required to have chains or socks (or winter tyres). Socks arent officially recognised, but the police accept them.
Since I first saw socks I was impressed, and after trying them convinced. They are so much easier to use than chains, and even if they do wear out after a few years they are worth it.
I'll probably switch to winter tyres next year though.

They probably have that in common with the people they're policing.

I should probably mention here that in my very limited experience, Italian police officers are extremely helpful.
Then again, I was only asking for directions.
