Isn't there a test payload that will be delivered to Mars when everything goes as planned?
Edit: They mentioned what will be sent on its way to mars in the article.

I think it is reasonable. You cant test with anything toxic, or anything too good, in case it f***s up, so an old car is ideal.

I thought it was quite smart, if it doesn't get too far the car could tow it back. (May need to swap out the batteries from the rocket.)

My comment wasn't actually meant to be sarcastic. As expensive as launches are, a scientific package of some description would have been a much better use of resources. A Tesla roadster is not a scientific package, and just makes the inhabitants of the planet look even more stupid to anyone that might be passing through.
