Hi All,
Beign that I am of the if it doesn't stop me I will live it attiude, I appear to have dropped someone in it unintentionally. The person in question is an OK guy but... he didn't show up Friday after I had cleared the deck to give him a hand... got a little bothered by that (he didn't phone, email, Hipchat, send smoke signals) so wasted a day (it was POETS day after all, so I did). I just feel bad for the guy that I started the where is X and someone from training came looking for him and my Boss who was working from home. Sorry for the long post

Don't.
It is not hard to phone or mail, and it is his own responsibility. And yes, you can easily find two minutes to send a mail that you're late (or otherwise unavailable for the day).

If you hire someone to paint your house and that person sends you a bill for work while not even being there - how would you react, as a "boss" yourself? Simply pay for a days work? 
I'm pretty sure you'll be understanding in case of emergencies or fire, and less so if there is no reason given.

Well, actually I had that. Twice. The same guy. I did not send the MP after him. Instead I first called the police and hospitals along his usual way to work and eventually found him. Both times he had proven himself to be a master at getting into absurd driving accidents.

My good old GeForce GTX 570 got smoked. The fan died silently and immediately something onboard overheated and died as well. Once it was the best you could get, now it's a zombie. Booting with the normal drivers ends in a bluescreen, but using it as an oldfashioned VGA with standard drivers still works, kindof.
Time for a new one. What is the current Nvidia chipset?

But ... you may have to check your PSU ratings ... it uses 250W all on it's own ... and take out a mortgage ...

Could pay that out of my piggy bank, just like the T-Rex 500 I got last week when I got my new used car. But let's not go overboard. The GTX 1070 looks good.

Quite possibly - but it's still silly money for a graphics card that will be out of date in a couple of months...

That does not matter so much. Look at it this way: It's going to last a few years like the old one. Time to catch up with the nice things the old one did not have and have a lot of time before I will have to think about buying yet another one. If you look at how many hours of programming, 3D designing and also some gaming I will spend with it, it's actually not so expensive.

I have a 1060 6GB and it runs Full HD full quality any game I tried up to Doom 4 and The Witcher 3 without a single frame skipped.
It is a mid-to-high range board, which I prefer since top of the line ones tend to age much faster. I plan to change Video Board every 2-3 years so I prefer getting a solid one at half the price of a high end device.

Fortunately, they'll make a game pretty soon that it'll suck with... just give it time. It's the cycle of tech life and all.

I played for 6 years with a laptop that had a crappy 3D board. I learnt to force the OpenGL and DirectX to turn off some feature directly in the drivers in order to maintain a reasonable frame rate.
I enjoy my full detail now that I can but I have no qualms in depowering the graphics or even scaling down the resolution while playing.

Totally agree with you there. I think fluidity and frame rate are more important than anything else.

I replaced my GTX 570 (still working though  ) just recently with a GTX 1070 6GB in compact form factor (which allows me to get the SSDs out without dismantling the graphics card first).
It displays my 4K desktop and a second HD desktop just fine while staying silent. The once-in-a-blue-moon 3D game also runs in 4K with the fan becoming clearly audible but not annoying.

With my first job I got to know quite a few jet pilots and they always said something like 'If the engine noise annoys you, just wait how you feel when they go silent." Those guys are definitely in love with their engines and fear the day when they don't get to fly with them anymore.

I always buy the second best card, it is usually the best value. Bought GTX 970 couple of years ago and still can play wow on max settings.

That's my strategy as well--buy the second-best card available at the time you're ready to upgrade.
In my case, my upgrades are in sync with the GTA releases. I've stopped gaming a long time ago, but I still make an exception every few years when a new installment comes out. I don't have the urge to spend money on upgrades right now, so it's probably a good thing the next GTA is still a few years away.
