I wonder how much IBM had to pay HCL to take on that crap. I didn't even know blotus was still a product.

Unfortunately, some corporate types that use the product refuse to move to away from it, and, when mergers and acquisitions happen, it is forced on the other parties.

I posted on this last week. I have good news.
I had an External drive go bad, or so I thought.. It's a Western Digitial 500gb drive. It is probably 90% full. The external enclosure had gone bad - the USB socket came off the board. I was able to get it to read for a few days, but then someone moved it and that was it. No more reading. So I brought it to work and gave it to one of the IT guys who plugged it into a docking station, and ZIP - nothing!! At this point I tried some data recovery apps, but no luck. At this point I thought "It's fried - data's gone".
Then I called a Data Recovery guy here in town. I brought the drive over and he called back later in the day and said "I've got good news & bad news". The bad news was that the drive was encrypted. That's why I wasn't able to see anything.
The good news is that he was able to recover everyting!!! He has an NDA with WD and has a key that unlocked the drive.
So I went to Best Buy and picked up a 3TB drive (for $79.00), brought it to him, and I now have everything back. Turns out that 500GB drive is still good. Gonna reformat it and stick it in my server for dev work.
So, going forward I'm thinking of this backup plan:
[] Google Pictures is free. All the wife's pics will go there.
[] My other docs (Tax Docs, projects, business docs, misc stuff) will go on DropBox. I have a 1TB plan and for now that can suffice.
[] I will use AOMEI Backupper each night to copy new files to either backup location.
What says you? Any reason my backup plan won't work? I'm open to any other reasonably priced options.
Thanks!
If it's not broken, fix it until it is.

I say you are on the road to great things, perhaps king of the world.
The fact that you have a backup plan (and it sounds fine to me), is a mighty step in the right direction.
I assume AOMEI Backupper is automated, or can be? If not, backup plans only work when you remember...or have time to, or don't get distracted.

Yes, you can set it up to do automatic backups.
I'll put the external drive on my server, along with AOMEI Backupper. After that it's fire & forget

My first thought when I read that was that I thought it sounded like scam. I figured the recovering person was attempting to get more money. Basically it should not be possible to recover if the key is lost.
But apparently WD makes is completely easy and thus completely insecure also. And apparently hardware failures make it show up.

Hopefully your buying choice wasn't based on it being secure. Of course if it was then you could become a named principal in a class action lawsuit perhaps.
