I've bought mostly cheap five Port ones and had only one fail, but I also went all spendy for a sixteen Port one a while back, which wasn't too expensive. I think it even has some firewall functionality.
I'll have to see what it is when I get home.

Definitely go with a consumer model like you're looking at, no matter how cheap a used/on sale rackmount one might look. I'll have obnoxiously loud fans, probably with no control since it's designed to go into an oven where they always need to be running.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, weighing all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

I've purchased them from Ebay - used or new. They work fine and are cheaper than brand new. I bought 24 port / 48 port and 8 port used switches for very reasonable prices. They've been working fine for years.

Continuing from here...
Since I am not at liberty to make a Weird and Wonderful post, I will rant here instead.
Apart from the 100 KLOC, there are some real "hidden" gems here. Apparently a series of callbacks go to 27 calls deep. And those were JavaScript Promise "then" callbacks invoking another promise.
No one taught them to return the promise.

Hi All,
<<start moan="">> got in early to help some one, who was on the verge of breaking 'elf & safety with their original plan, found they had done a no-no, was hesitant to touch said no-no, when no-no starts making annoying sounds, gets others annoyed. Take life into hands to undo and silence no-no. Wait 5 count 'em count 'em 5 hours for said person to turn up. Do three minutes on no-no, 'but it was easier than...', spend time wasted getting upto speed, just managed to do a cut to work plan (due to wrong sensors ordered ) to get it finished in time, me aside from ordering the bits and bobs I could have done the project minus the docs which he still has to do in about a week... <<end moan="">>

WROTD - windows rant of the day (in case you wondered)
I just spent 4 hours debugging some logging code (refactor operation, I can't take the lunacy any longer). So, code changes done, time to test on the device. Let things run, all looks good. Ftp the file (using Windows Explorer) from device to desktop. Windows Explorer says:
"Yo, dude. That file already exists. Do you want to replace the old file with the new file?"
Yes, I sure do. Click the overwrite option. Open the file. Nothing has changed. Hmmm, logger is broken, go debug...
Time passes.... repeat Windows Explorer drag / drop ftp operation multiple times. Nothing changes in the log file (but the sizes show ever increasing file on the target device). Keep debugging... can't find it in the debugger.
Pop the SD card out the logger uses, pop it into laptop - file magically has all the log messages.
No error messages on the ftp, looks like the file copies, file does not copy. This is in my home office. Go to customer lab. ftp operation works. Double
The development network is all static IP going through hubs. I'm thinking firewall issues, but no error messages. Ideas? Other than rum, too early for rum.
