Sounds like you have a lot to say there, but get started! (8)
Should be fairly handy, I hope not too handy.

I think I might know the answer but there's no way I am waking up at 4AM to post one tomorrow morning

For a change I had an idea (totally off-base it turned out on 2nd thought); but even more than the posting time (any early risers can cry into their coffee for all I care) just being obligated to come up with one was grounds enough to not post.

For once I was going to be right. Go figure. Still, given the time difference, playing this game is not an option for me but they do propose some really good puzzlers.

Anyone have a link showing how many routers use the same core software?
And now I read that our illustrious FCC has instituted new regulations requiring routers to be locked down, no flashing with open source software. So, no way to really fix this until the vendors release an update, har, har, har.

Your FUD is a year or two out of date. After one router maker started using locked boot loaders the FCC explicitly said that doing so wasn't required by the ruling.

The supernovae that formed the two neutron stars probably formed a good portion of heavy elements as well and distributed them in space.

Some, probably yes; but most of the heaviest, probably not.
Getting the biggest atoms out of supernova's in anything approaching the needed amounts had always been iffy (just not enough time to jam that many neutrons in); leaving NS collisions as a more attractive source. But until a few months ago we'd never been able to detect one. Now we have, and it produced enough that if estimates of how common they are are also correct (we should have a reasonable handle on this number in a few more years), that they've produced most of it.

methinks I'll stick to alchemy,
from the description banging neutron stars together would be somewhat unsafe.

Unsafe why? Smash two neutron stars together and you just get a fat neutron star, right?
