Thanks but the point was to get away from the office for a few days. Getting someone in means that we'll get5 pulled out to fix things!

Unless your are going to an MSDN conference type event, I have never seen it that way in the real world. Just saying. They come to you, you don't go to them. That is how it usually works.

.NET magazine cover
(sorry about the almost-unreadable text, but this is the largest image I could find)
I hope Rachel Andrew's Guide to Modern Web Design has something to say about covering up actually useful information, such as a magazine's issue number and month, with a useless graphic.

I think they misspelled the title. Should it not be .Nerd magazine?
The user can't update the up: we update it for them (Choice in the CP poll)

It's Issue 298, October 2017.
You're welcome!

I was aware of that. That was not my point.
FWIW, the spine portion is not visible in the original PDF I first saw (which I couldn't link to)

The spine was not visible on the PDF I first saw either. But then, it was a technical manual on the HP 4952A protocol analyser.

UX Theory?
Just t'other day was an article in the CP daily email about how modern UX's were measured and proven to be hampering productivity to the tune of millions (or was it billions) of dollars.
and the ms lemmings want to share advice on UX???? WTFF is wrong with this picture??
yes metro (or whaterver-the-hell-it's-called-today) is not just ugly, it's now been demonstrably measured as bad for business

I think it's called "Urban" as in "Urban Wasteland".
Next week it'll be downgraded to "Detroit".

Shockingly, I didn't need any article to have that proven to me. I could've told anyone back in the Windows 8.0 days that you spend a lot more time just navigating around modern UIs than you do performing useful functions.

Somehow that article made its way onto our yammer site .
I DID tell them years ago and argued myself blue in the face that it was a crappy design. Earlier this year they got in a UX design team to give us a more "modern" look and feel. Guess what they designed.

My windows 10 looks like windows 95.
Start icon in the corner.
The 'programs' in the box when I click on it. And a 'Run'
My open windows do not consolidate.
There are no open boxes to the left or right and for that matter very few icons on the screen. (Excluding games although those are just so I know what I have already played.)
I have come to appreciate the most recently used app, so I leave it there although I could turn that off.

I think the web-design expert should have helped them out with the gaudy eye-sore of a cover design.
Maybe just poke there their eyes out and call it a day.

imho, a garish, mind-numbing, design, but, do remember that mass-market print magazines often use zap-pow-bang covers to try to capture eyeballs.
