I ordered one of these Chuwi Hi12 Keyboard[^] at the same time - it's designed to work with it.
I also ordered a cheap Amazon Fire tablet to tide me over 'til the big one arrives from China ...

I almost got one of those, but it's short of keys, and I don't find little bluetooth keyboards very comfortable to use.
The gamepad style suits me down to the ground -- no more sitting up at desks to use a tablet, for me!

Do you have Android SDK? May be you can bring it back to life through ADB.

Windows won't let me - it claims the USB device malfunctions, so "ADB devices" doesn't even list it.

And if it lasts to around 2022-2027 a new in 2012 ipad would finally become cheaper in terms of years of use/dollar.
Assuming that a 10-15 year old model would be good for use as anything but a cutting board at that point.

Right...
Did you factor in the lost time buying and setting up the new "cheap" devices? I say devices because it may require 2-3 of them to cover a decent time span. Did you factor in the lost productivity when the "cheap" devices failed when you were trying to actually use them for something real? Did you factor in the lost sales when the "cheap" device failed in front of a prospective customer?
Call me crazy but I still look for quality in the devices I buy and use. Not popular in today's throw away world but there you are.

If a massive EMP struck every electronic device in the country, I would not shed a single tear. Also, my job doesn't rely on me having a tablet, or even a cell phone.

Look, all I'm saying is that the cheapest initial purchase price doesn't necessarily yield the best value over time.
Forget tablets and phones - do you buy cheap knock-off tools to work on your car? Do you buy the cheapest aftermarket parts to go in it - or do you buy quality?
Sheesh!

Well, tablets/phones are designed to be obsoleted, so eventually, even if they don't actually fail, you are pushed/prodded/forced to "upgrade".
To cite your examples, that doesn't happen with hand tools. Parts are kind of out of context because we're dealing with tools when we talk about electronic devices.
Beyond that, device manufacturers actually count on peer pressure to get people to upgrade, while nobody really gives a damn which 1/2-inch wrench you used to tighten a bolt.

What about a humongous solar flare?
Your landline (electronic exchange), TV, car will also be rendered useless too.
Everything's god chips these days, even your fridge will probably sh*t itself (power would be down anyway so wouldn't notice - time to eat all the ice cream and barbecue every steak therein), even a lot of portable generators rely on electronic dodads.
Pretty much every computer person would be out of work, like everybody else learning to drive horses, make fire out of wood, and eat squirrels' nuts and all. (apostrophe or comma?)

Your career depends on an iToy?
Do much programming on it, then?
My Windows tablet (less than half the price of an iToy) runs VS, any version you like.

How do you manage that with an iToy?
Is there even a terminal appie for it? I never bothered looking for one for my iToy 3, because the device was incapable of so much else that it was a waste of baggage space.
And cabling? How the Hell do you connect? How much does apple screw you for an serial dongle?

It's not arrogance; it's my opinion. You state your opinions just as strongly.
Unless, of course, you're saying that I'm not entitled to an opinion.
Or maybe I should lie, or be the kind of w@nker who sucks up to everyone by saying what others want to hear, rather than what I think?
Sorry, but none of that washes, with me.
I will state what I think, i.e. that apple mobile devices are of no use to me, because they're just toys for people to browse the Internet, take photos, play games, and maybe -- just maybe -- be used to show work-related docs or web pages to others at work.
That's what they're designed for, and I dare say they do it very well -- but they're still just toys, by comparison to what I need.

Mark_Wallace wrote: It's not arrogance; it's my opinion. You state your opinions just as strongly. No I don't. Nor do most people that try to be civil on internet forums. If I acted like you I might have written something like...
"fAndroid devices are cheap plastic junk that won't last more than about a year - assuming of course that malware from sh*tty Chinese app sites doesn't corrupt that embarrassingly un-secure OS before then. They're built for bottom feeders that can't afford decent kit."
Mark_Wallace wrote: Unless, of course, you're saying that I'm not entitled to an opinion.Or maybe I should lie, or be the kind of w@nker who sucks up to everyone by saying what others want to hear, rather than what I think? Good grief. I never even hinted at anything like that.
As for the rest of your statements... It's a safe statement that the VAST MAJORITY of ALL tablets (iOS, Android, Windows) are used by people to browse the Internet, take photos, play games and maybe show work related docs at work. Sheesh. Tablets (due to form factor, not OS) as a rule just aren't the right tool (yet) to do serious software development. Every dev I know uses a real desktop or laptop and isn't about to switch.
That being said I'm seeing more and more tablets (usually iPads to date) being used in retail POS, medical data logging and other work related functions. With server side apps and data synching tablets are a great choice.
