Okay, I'm going to stop smoking and hopefully raise some money for the local kid's hospital in the process. If anyone would like to donate, please do so here.[^]

Surely, the money you will save from not buying cigs should be enough to hit your fund-collecting goal in an year, maybe two years?
|
|

Well, I'll be donating what I save but any extra helps.
And the more I think about, it would be far quicker than that!

Well done - and good luck!
It's worth it in the long run: I wouldn't go back to it now.

How long ago did you stop?

Last cigarette on October 12th 2004.

I think that's long enough to be able to safely say that you've stopped!

Probably!
Once I'd taken the last nicorette patch off, I didn't miss 'em - except when my mother died - but even then I didn't go there, I'm glad to say.
Get yourself some dried fruit - it gives you something to do with your hands - and try to avoid places where you have a history of smoking while you are stopping. It should be easier now since there are so few places indoors where you can smoke anyway!

Hmmm, the places where I tend to smoke the most would be my house and the pub. Neither are remotely avoidable (especially the pub!)
Having spent the last year losing a massive amount of weight, I'm extremely wary of using food as a substitute but I expect that a few tablet games will help me get through any sofa time.

Forget all the little tricks. Simply smoke twice as much as usual, overdo it on purpose and build up a real aversion which you can use to get over any temptation to start again.

I quit over 10 years ago and I don't think I could go back even if I wanted to. It was very true for me that the smell of the smoke got to be very repugnant after I quit. I can't stand to be around people that smoke just because the smell is awful.
So, good for you.

I have a similar thing with coffee - I had to give up caffeine about 12 years ago and I find the smell of coffee really horrible these days.
The smell of tea, on the other hand, is still very enticing.

Hmm... I have the same aversion. I find that the smell of coffee is also bad to me. Of course, I don't drink the stuff anyway. That and that awful Dihydrogen Monoxide. Deadly stuff.

There are people who actually drink that?
Don't they have any idea what fish do in it?

I quit over 20 years ago. It's stupid to smoke. I'll smoke the occasional cigar still, but cigarettes are just nasty. They stain your teeth and stink up everything you own. Nobody with a clean mouth wants to kiss a smoker either. So kudos for quitting.

The worst is that you don't notice anymore how you stink. Some lady really was irritated when she took the seat behind me in a bus and I got up and sat someplace else.

I quit over a decade ago but I think it may have been too late, I still have the lung capacity of a gnat.
