So I'm on my 4th contract gig in a row. All 4 we're supposed to be Contract To Hire, yet in all 4 cases budgetary constrains, hiring freezes, and the like, have prevented me from going FT.
That included my current contract which will end in late October. They tried to get me in FT, but the bean counters up above said No. So I started looking and through IndeedDotCom found a FT position close to here that looked really promising. I applied.
Within a few hours I got a response email from a recruiter who said "they are interested in you" and asked for more details on my experience, which I immediately responded to.
The a week goes by. I called the recruiter 3 times, and emailed 3 times - no response.
Then yesterday afternoon I get another query about my experience. I quickly responded.
Then a few hours later I he writes back "They have decided not to pursue you due to the large number of contract positions you have on your resume".
So I wrote back "Do you have a few minutes to talk" - Mind you, I had still not yet ever spoken to the recruiter.
He responded "I'm sorry there's nothing I can do for you. They have decided against interviewing you and won't change their minds"
I was friggin steaming mad!!
Last night I emailed him this:
Dear [redacted],
I have been thinking about this all day and I wanted to take a moment to send you this.
I am very disappointed in the way you attempted to represent me for this position. I made 6 separate attempts prior to yesterday to reach you BEFORE you sent my info to the client and got no response until late yesterday.
I wanted to discuss the company and the position and my background with you prior to you sending my resume to the client. I am aware that I have a done a number of contract positions recently, and I'm aware of how companies sometimes perceive that.
However what you don't know, because you made no attempt to find out from me, is that the last 4 contract positions I worked were all supposed to be 3-5 month contract to Hire positions. In all 4 cases issues outside of my control, such as budgetary restraints, hiring freezes, project cancellations and the like have all left me looking for a new position. My resume includes references from prior position supervisors who would have all confirmed that my employment were outside of my control. The position I'm at now had the same concern, and once discussed, they decided to proceed with me.
Now, instead of your client having a very experienced, capable developer, and me having a position that I was excited about, both of us are out.
I have to say that I work almost exclusively with recruiters, and the ones that make the transition enjoyable are those that approachable, understanding, and involved with both parties. I'm sorry to say that in your case, I don't feel that way.
If this guy has picked up the phone ONCE and talked to me, I might have that job right now.
I looked him up on Linked in. He's been working as a recruiter since January. Before that he was a "Financial Analyist" for a year and a half and was a "Sales Intern" before that.
Maybe companies should research their recruiters before posting jobs.

I had a very familiar experience a few years ago. In all my 40+ years in IT I only came across 3 or 4 recruiters who were any use. The majority seem to be kids who have no understanding of dealing with people, and even less about IT. Of all the jobs I have had (both contract and employee) only two were gained through recruiters.

I wish it were that way. It seems like these days you can't find a job posted directly by a company. Almost every job I find on job search boards is posted by recruiters.

I met a recruiter once who told me that he hadn't realised what difficult was until he'd gone through a recruitment downturn. I asked him how long he'd been in the game - his reply "since last August". This was in February. In an economic upturn where there were plenty of jobs on the market.

If I knew the name of the company, I would send them what i posted so they know who their dealing with.

The only different between a recruiter and a pimp is that the pimp is honest about using you to pad his pockets and letting you know that he really doesn't care about you.

Man, don't worry about them guys. You're a talented developer. It was probably a blessing in disguise, if they can't do their job in recruitment it may not have even been a great gig anyway. If you want, I can put you in touch with a recruiter that I know is cool and won't ignore your emails, just let me know and I'll send her your resume and contact info.

Actually the title should be inconsiderate recruiters. The stupid ones are the companies that cannot filter valid criteria from invalid criteria. If a person keeps being let go because of budget issues, that is different from being let go for competence.

You're right. And that's the whole point here - he never asked.

I've have not seen a CV with reason for leaving a gig in many years, I know it used to be part of the standard CV.

You wasted the effort to create that email - the recruiter will just delete it and move on - you're just one of hundreds of unwitting victims that he will piss off on a daily basis by being an untrained parasite.
It's likely that, like many recruiters, he has no understanding of the business he is attempting to leech from and simply plays the numbers game - at some point he will get lucky and make some money.

Well, sometimes tjhat happens. I was teaching at the University of Texas and was asked to stay on full time. IO agreed, buyt the state legislature passed a budget that precludes me continuing, so now I{m looking for a teaching position just about anywhere in the US or South America.
But, on another subject, I filed for full retirement last week, so I can survive without a job.So if I take on any work, it will be because I would find it fun!

I went to an interview and was asked if I had experience of X, I said why yes it's on my CV, the reply was not on the version we have. So I dig out a proper version of my CV the interviewer seemed overjoyed I had experience of X, Y & Z. I then got a copy of the CV that had been sent. It was so badly edited, no mention of the extra courses I have done at Texas Instrument, no radio certifcations etc. I think the agent had taken everything he was not familiar with out!

Apologies for the link to my blog[^], but a pic of what my client set up is there, below it is my setup at home for testing the software.
Some of you may know what I mean by when I say, these are ready to be installed in the "club." These are going to a new "facility" in Tijuana (and no, not a prison.)
