That's good.
In my experience, the HDDs are very reliable devices. I still use some very very old ones.

They can be very robust - but they will fail: bearings wear out, servos loose accuracy, heads crash. And the old ones seem to be more reliable than the new in my experience. Probably because they spin faster, fly closer, and pack data more densely.

You are not confusing it with a model helicopter?

This is Javascript. If you put big wheels and a racing stripe on a golf cart, it's still a f***ing golf cart.

Nah...HDDs are easier to back up!

Speaking of backing up - I'm training flying backwards now. For the time being only with the simulator because I still struggle too much with not steering as if I was flying forwards.

OriginalGriff wrote: Probably because they spin faster, fly closer, and pack data more densely. I agree about how the older ones seemed to last the life a a PC. The problem is not so much the data density/speed/etc., but rather the source of manufacture and the attitude.
It turns out that, with the reduced cost of manufacturing in China, doing QC at the user end is cheaper than the real thing. If the drive dies - give them a new one! Look at how many drives (from any manufacturer) are DOA, or join the legions of the dead within a few weeks. As for your data? Not their problem, is it?
My philosophical outlook (and why I don't by > 1TB drives) is: An unreliable Hard Drive is overpriced at "Free"

Yeah - I'll never go back to HDDs, and Win10 is a lot faster on things like boot and wake-up. Way faster.

I use Windows 8/10 boot-up speed as an example in training/discussions to prove that performance improvement is a never-ending process and never hits a wall.

I don't think my mum ever used a computer - or even a digital timer!
Iris does well - she does things with Word that I don't even try, like making one-page-folding-booklets.

Speaking as one who never shuts down a computer unless forced, kicking and screaming, to do so, I don't really give a damn about start-up times. We all need to get coffee or do toilet-paper origami some time, no?
But transferring my weven systems and {pf}s to SSD made such a difference in general performance that I don't think I'd ever be happy to use HDDs for them again.

Nor do I.
But with a lappie, being able to just open it up and it's out of hibernate and ready to rock in a second or so is a big plus as far as battery life goes!
