This is just the second day I have stopped using smart phone. I have observed that almost everyone is looking something on the phone screen. Even people sitting in a group are not talking. Rather looking at phone.
Even when I had smart phone, I did not buy data*. So there was very little reason for me to take it out, look at something irrelevant or something I had seen already, keep it back in.
*Yes, it is true. I used to buy 25 MB of data when I really needed; which invariably was to book uber. Otherwise, nothing.

I was allowed to take the iPhone 4S with me, when I left the previous company. I would have not bought any smartphone at regular price.
Since then... I don't usually buy data. Don't use FB. Almost no App-Downloads. But I do find useful: Camera, Calender, Reminders and other basic staff like this.
Only thing I use is Whatsapp to chat / speak with my family when I am in Asia for work (I would prefer Threema, but almost noone in my social contacts use it). I have a local prepaid card where I buy data packages.

I find that a couple of apps are really useful and that I use many times a day.
Twitter, I follow
- Local National Weather Service office and Emergency Management office
- Local news stations, papers, and reporters
- A couple of national news services
- Katee Sackhoff (just because)
- Nathan Fillion (if they ever bring back Firefly, he'll be the first no know)
Robinhood, because who doesn't like trading stock with $0 commissions

I have noticed (compared to others) I really don't use the "smart" functions of my smartphone so much.
I do like having the camera, comes in handy from time to time.
Other than that, I check my mails once a day on it and that is just to clean up the spam / uninteresting mails (I read the others on my desktop when I get home).
And to have music, I refuse to listen to the add infested / nothing but talk radio stations in the car so...
It always bugs me to see people sitting at a table and doing nothing but looking at their phone, I'v even observed people sitting across from each other "talking" by using the phone (chat) rather than their voices.

Camera: Irrelevant for daily use. For weekend bike rides, I will need one and will take my Nexus on those days.

I realise this is dangerously close to a coding question - but opinions wanted: is it a smell to have a lookup table in your database that mirrors an enumerated type in your code?
(like e.g. Currencies)

Personally? No, I can see it being useful - provided there is some system to keep them both up to date.
I can see it helping if the DB is to be used from a number of applications, too.
It's the "up to date" bit that's the major headache.

Yeah - we may have to create a system that generates the reference data from the enumerated types (using attributes to link to the tables) as part of the build process. Feels a bit "icky".

The advantage of it (once it's all working) is that you can set the columns that use it as a foreign key so your DB can't hold invalid values. Worth a bit of "ickiness"?
