Every time there is a significant political event that affects the UK, we get a bunch of postings by Brits here in the Lounge that violate the "No Politics" rule.
Are Brits excluded from this rule? Should we start kicking them?

Maybe they forgot to put the "Joke" sign with their messages to denote they are still joking and kidding about everything.

Afzaal Ahmad Zeeshan wrote: they forgot to put the "Joke" sign with their messages Hi Afzaal, Funny thing that ... I've never seen a Lounge post here that did not have at least one smiley emoticon, and many of them have one at the end of every sentence.
But, if I look closely at them, sometimes they go away, temporarily
cheers, Bill
«There is a spectrum, from "clearly desirable behaviour," to "possibly dodgy behavior that still makes some sense," to "clearly undesirable behavior." We try to make the latter into warnings or, better, errors. But stuff that is in the middle category you don’t want to restrict unless there is a clear way to work around it.» Eric Lippert, May 14, 2008

That's because I'm never serious about politics, religion, or sex.

Oh, I can be serious about it, but not when discussing it!
Those are the three topics most likely to inflame people; mostly because few people will apply any logic or reasoning to any of them! Faith rules in those arenas...

Yes, because these topics are really very hot.

Well like the war, we didn't start it. You'll find that original poster for all of the threads that might be considered non-Lounge are from outside the sceptr'd isle, that majority, in fact, from USA! USA!! USA!!!
Don't worry, we accept your pathetic, grovelling apology with the grace that we afford all foreigners! After all ...

It's just that they're foreign that makes them so mad

Does that mean we can return to newspaper headlines like this?

So there's the rule, and there's the reason behind the rule.
The rule is straightforward. The reason behind the rule is to remind people that this is site for software developers, not axe-grinders, and debates on some topics (sex, religion, politics, and the best beer) can take over everything and make the forum pointless for everyone except the few argumentative trolls who insist on stirring up pointless debates.
In this specific case its kinda of A Big Deal. This will affect software developers on both sides of the pond. It affects everyone, and affects those in the UK acutely. It's also the sort of discussion that will run its course naturally and be over with in a few days.
We're a community, we share our experiences, our thoughts, our hopes and fears and our outlooks. To not allow this would kill what we have going here.
Having said that, the kid-sister rule always applies, and if the discussion does start turning into axe-grinding, baiting or trollsters then the discussions get moved or nuked.
I trust you guys to be sensible. You generally are - and for that we're grateful.
cheers
Chris Maunder
