I did hear Xamarin is built into VS now, and that it's free. But didn't know about Petzold's book. Back in the days, 'Petzold's book' used to be the windows programming one.

Seems like something I might get installed, anyway, as I'm migrating my work platforms to Win7*. I'll need to check if my MSDN subscription is up-to-date for that. Checking, it seems that it will install on Win7, so I'm OK with your suggestion in that regard. And, of course, there's a world of open source.
For some reason I maintain a bad attitude - like I won't be having fun. A good time for me to be wrong. On the bright side, my progeny will be delighted I can make toys for them. Perhaps I'll even get rich. And famous.
The above notwithstanding, thanks for what could be an all-in-one solution should resource procurement permit.
* I stay with and develop on what everyone (here) uses - thus, as the last XP disappears I'll finally update since I'll have nothing to more to support.

Company has about 450 employees - as of now, this is a voice-from-on-high backroom project. I've no idea how far it needs to be distributed. It would probably be a hook into driving company business - so open-sourcing it would likely not be a problem.
It appears, looking at the site, that these are cloud-based. That makes me want to look elsewhere for an environment.
Thanks again for being a knower-of-things.

Just my thought:
I would feel wary of using VS, I would prefer the official IDE, even though VS is a superior dev env. Simply because Xamarin is an extra layer between you and the OS. I think you would be learning Xamarin and not Android. Which may not be bad, but it did not seem like your original plan.

Well - my personality for development is 'without' frameworks. Apparently (as I'm very much just beginning to learn) Android likes Java, but C++, &etc., can also work, and work better.
Your idea is my preferred target realm: see and know what I'm doing, but I won't discount the other too quickly - I'm part of the VS environment, already, although many versions behind.
Thanks for making me feel a bit less contrary than I thought. For now, however, the hunt is on.

Looking at Eclipse: I can make other use of it at the same time.

I'm in the same boat...have to research android for a new customer who wants to use Kindle Fire's for launching a...never mind...
What I tried:
A few weeks before VS 2015 and Xamarin, I installed Android Studio and using my own Kindle Fire quickly had something working. It's really just Java with some quirks. There's a ton of documentation for android development. It worked, though I still could not figure out how to get something as simple as the user-defined device name. (I gave up and resorted to the wireless adapter mac)
After MS announced Xamarin was part of VS 2015 CE, I installed it and tried my luck there. It was nice to be back in C# but the debugger is a little flaky and caused me hours of cursing and swearing. Once understanding the limitations of the debugger, it has been nice to work with and I prefer it over AS. (for now)

And...it worked first time when I transplanted all the guts!
What really surprised me was the noise!
The old Acer box had a 200W PSU (which wasn't man enough - my fault) with a 4cm cooling fan. The new 500W PSU one has a 12cm fan, the new case has another 12cm fan and it's nearly silent!
(And more importantly, it turns on with the DVD drive connected, and the graphics tablet, and the webcam, and... which the old one didn't!)
Plus the case has a place for the SSD, so that isn't cable tied into position any more, and it's a full height case so one of the monitor leads doesn't have to go through the case and need cardboard insulation to prevent it shorting on the graphics and / or SATA cards... Yay!

Bigger vents tend to run at lower velocities. If they are properly constructed (i.e they do not have low-frequency rattling) they are more silent. Unless you overclock both the CPU and GPU forcing the vent to unleash the power.
Then you'll have a small turbojet taking off under you desk.

I have had the same 'box and guts' for about 7 years now. For the last few years, the fan noise had gotten to be quite noticeable, but I never thought much about it until I put Windows 10 with a new SSD on it a few months back. Windows 10 installed a demo version of Minecraft which I found to be amusing enough to buy. The game was fun, but I noticed that the fans would really spin up after a few minutes followed a few minutes later by a faint burning smell followed quickly by an instant system shutdown.
I installed a hardware monitor and found that the CPU temps were reaching over 270F! After a thorough cleaning, the hw monitor showed the CPU temps maintaining less than 150F and the reduction in noise was huge! Now, I hardly hear it at all.

Well, when i was 4, my dad bought a trusty XBox. you know, the first, ruggedy, blocky one from 2001. we had tons and tons and tons of fun playing all kinds of games together - until he died, when i was just 6.
i couldnt touch that console for 10 years.
but once i did, i noticed something.
we used to play a racing game, Rally Sports Challenge. actually pretty awesome for the time it came.
and once i started meddling around... i found a GHOST.
literaly.
you know, when a time race happens, that the fastest lap so far gets recorded as a ghost driver? yep, you guessed it - his ghost still rolls around the track today.
and so i played and played, and played, untill i was almost able to beat the ghost. until one day i got ahead of it, i surpassed it, and...~
i stopped right in front of the finish line, just to ensure i wouldnt delete it.
Bliss.

Thanks for sharing! This story is especially moving for me today. My family received the news yesterday morning that my dad's surgery to remove a stage 1 growth in his stomach revealed much worse..stage 4 and affecting stomach, small intestines, and pancreas. The only hope now is chemotherapy starting in a couple of weeks. At any moment now they will be giving him the news. I can't be there, but my mom and brothers will be. I'm trying to be optimistic about it all and just stay busy. Cancer sucks!
