Thanks. That would still be fine for most of my cygwin usage.

I think someone is gonna find a way to circumvent it.
My take would be that Microsoft will release an Ubuntu cli command to launch UWPs.

Apart from that, it's cortana, cortana, cortana.
Mind you, the "Find my Desktop" looks interesting.

eh, wake me up when they've fixed windowsupdate, when the control panel and startmenu don't make me waaaait for them, and when they've actually got the control panel fully integrated.
i don't know why these fluffy things you mention are even being worked on when core stuff (well, ok, top level UI stuff) is broken.

Why are we talking about *nix running on Windows being cool?
Netmanage Chameleon had this working smoothly around about 1992 on Windows 3.1.
Cygwin has allowed this for years. And there are other locally compiled shells and utils:
Native Win32 ports of some GNU utilities[^]
In my view, there are no mission critical apps that require Linux (ubuntu or otherwise). And we have been able to run *nix on VMs sitting on Windows boxes for years.
Am I just missing something or is it just having another way to do the same thing one more time 25 years after it was innovative?

It's mainly to allow folks to use Linux dev tools not ported to Windows yet.

My book, Amazon.com: Launch Your Android App eBook: Roger Deutsch: Kindle Store[^] is 100% free for download (amazon) but only until 12am PST April 8, 2016.
Am I Allowed To Share Free Things?
I am serious, is it okay to give my book away for free?
If the book were written by another author and I was giving you the link to a free technical book would that be okay?
My book is a technical book and related to the community here. I can understand if it weren't how this might anger some.
Before Your Knee-Jerks (Marks As Spam)
I know that this message might be controversial but please note a few items before you knee-jerk mark as spam.
1. I support this community with numerous articles and discussions (and will continue to do so) -- spammers only force their garbage on you.
2. I am honestly attempting to give something away that has value. -- spammers only force advertising on you with no benefit to you.
3. I am not anonymous. -- spammers are anonymous
4. Yes, I derive benefit from it, but I'm offering value also. -- spammers don't do that.
5. Did I mention it's free?
If You decided to Mark As Spam
Please, at least start a dialog about this and let me know why. I won't get mad. I'm honestly attempting to provide value to the community.

I can't speak officially, but personally, I'd say it looks interesting. I'd download it for free if I had a Kindle (but I don't).
I'd prefer PDF-format, though.
But seeing it's not PDF and I don't have a Kindle, I guess I'll have to wait until it comes out as a movie (on Pirate Bay)...

Thanks Griff.
That was extremely nice of you to post that and for whoever let me through the spam filter.
I really appreciate it.

No problem!
I can't see it as spam if you are giving it away!

A somewhat flawed piece of logic, wouldn't you say? Now you've set the precedent are you going to let me publicise my free list of aliens in power around the world or peddle my free advice on bringing down the Government using nothing but a thumbnail drive and an apple core?
I don't have any problems with the decision. I just wonder whether which slippery slope it may lead us to.
I am not a number. I am a ... no, wait!

Not really. Spam is advertising, which at it's heart is trying to get something (money, traffic, clicks, whatever) which is of benefit to the person posting it. He isn't - he's pointing you are a site where you can get something he has put a lot of effort into (I hope) for nothing. And as far as I know, Amazon doesn't pay you for someone looking at your book on their site!
So I don't see it as spam.
Your examples aren't spam either. They are probably rubbish, or worse: religion. But they aren't spam. You might get kicked as a troll though!

The fun is going to be finding time to read it - I've only just opened the Xamarin book that

Thanks so much.
Also, you can get the book as a free download and read it on your computer via kindle app on your computer which can run inside your browser.

That's very generous of you. Maybe now I can learn all those extra bits of Android development that have eluded me. I hope you actually end up making some money from it - let us know when you hit $1,000.

Thanks so much. I cannot put into words how much your words encouraged me. I really appreciate it.
A big part of writing my books is honestly about creating value for my readers. I don't want to waste their time and I want to charge them as little as possible.
Thanks again.
