Thanks - it was really interesting reading the blurb too about how they took the pictures and the logistics. That's one of the things about National Geographic - they take you there with the story behind the scenes too.

OT, did you go there in the army, not to be too rude you seem to be of the right age. A couple of my friends went to Veitnam on a 'hippy trail' said it was a beautiful place.

Pilot: Well, anything for a fellow Marine.
Homer: (Salutes) Yeah, Semper fudge.
Pilot: Uh, did you just say "Semper fudge"?
Homer: No, I said the right thing.

I have a friend who served five years with the Navy Seals during that time.
He claims he was never in battle during all those five years.
But his wife has told me about his nightmares.

We don't talk about out experiences much because on the rare occasion we do people generally get real quite and walk away or just ignore you.

That's quite understandable.
He's been quite colourful in describing the rest of his life, and he's had wild one. He was even writing a book about it, sadly it won't get ready as far as I know, since the onset of Alzheimers.

Bummer, to bad someone close to him can't get his stories during his lucid moments.

I believe quite a lot of it was done already, via dictaphone.
He's dyslexic and was told all the time by all his teachers that he was stupid.
When he did his service his command (can't remember what grade it was now) told him that he was not stupid but rather dyslexic, so he got an education as an electrician specially adjusted for him by the navy. He was so grateful that he stayed for another period.
Got to ask his wife about it, but when he told us about the book she only knew about it, nothing about the contents. He was doing it directly with some publisher.

Awesome, if it ever gets published would love to read it.
In the early 80s my girlfriend at the time gave me a book called Nam by Mark Baker[^]. Good book!
I lent it to someone years ago so I don't have it anymore.
[Update]
Just ordered it from Amazon

I thought I ought to tell you that he passed away a while ago.
He sadly never finished the book.
His wife got her hands on the manuscript, but she was not able to make enough sense out of it to put it together into a book.
She's not sure what was real and not any more, he was having both Alzheimers and Parkinson in the end.

Thanks for the update. We're starting to thin out more rapidly now.
I wonder if his problems had anything to do with Agent Orange? It has affected a lot of us!

Wouldn't know, the doctors recognized Alzheimers and Parkinson, but they said there was something more that they couldn't put their fingers on. But they both had the opinion that living in Sweden having a US health insurance is great.
Anyway, RIP, to one of the coolest people I've had the honour to meet.

I have read alot of other books related to the conflict and other cold war types (Falklands) One thing is how similar they are for instance Yompers Amazon.co.uk's Book Store[^] about the Royal Marines in the Falklands and Amazon.co.uk's Book Store[^] Guns Up about the US Marines, very different view points Yompers was written by the commanding officer who's main concern was keeping the Marines & Paras seperate from each other but similar to Guns Up written by an enlisted machine gunner but very similar none the less.

I have a friend who did write a book abut his experiences. Some of the experiences he shared with me over a beer were quite incredible. I can understand how some might not want to talk about them.
