Mmhh... Sounds a lot like CP TV, maybe not a good idea, after all.

Looks like right person, right time, right place.
Most of us have at least one of these being not right, that's why we are still where we are. And IMHO, we're not too bad either.

Our internal windows patch server appears to be acting up. Last Friday I wasn't able to get any of the MS patches to install (they either stall out at 0%, or fail and schedule a retry a month from now); it's still not working this morning. The patch tuesday load are all past due; WTE they fix the server and all the patches install everyone who didn't have the patches installed is going to be gifted with a forced reboot and howls of anguish will echo from the walls as a result. I've emailed the helpdesk about the problem hoping that will get me on the list of people who get a 'we fixed it' email, and that the warning it provides will mean that my voice doesn't join the chorus.

Never miss an opportunity to tell your IT guy how to do his job, especially when things haven't been working for a month.
Open up %windir%\windowsupdate.log and look for an error code. Googling it should give you a pretty good idea what's going on, at least on your end.

Not really. Per check for updates cycle I get 3 failures like this:
2015-10-19 12:54:01:686 1052 27f4 Agent Bundle contains no deployed children and thus is invalid.
2015-10-19 12:54:01:686 1052 27f4 Agent Update {65CDB5FE-D1E6-4B76-AC06-2486E1E6ED82}.201 is not a valid bundle. Not returning it.
..which suggests that something might be messed on their WSUS server; but the Software Center tool they use to manage patching has 6 installs at 0% (these look to be patch Tuesday items), and 14 that fail over to a retry in just under a month from now (these appear to be updates tied to installing a service pack for office 2010). I don't have any way to map the GUIDs to KB items; but Google is first showing (mostly sketchy looking) pages from 2013, so WTE those are I don't think they're any of the current set of updates. The invalid bundle warnings first appeared on Friday, the GUIDs in question were showing up without error as far back as the top of the log (sept 30).
The log file has nothing about trying to download anything that I can see.
OTOH I'd assumed something was wrong with the WSUS server already based on my not getting a reply. They tend not to send out "we know, you're the NNNth person to report it" type emails for something that's broken sitewide (unless it causes a work stoppage in which case the entire company gets an email); while if the problem was believed to be on my end I'd've expected a tech to've remoted into my PC within an hour of my email to sanity check the basics.

WSUS tends to randomly fail. We've fixed that at our company by giving it it's own virtual sandbox on the HYPER-V Server, which seems to work well. Sometimes it still has it's failovers, but that is our own fault for using MS products.

This's been out since at least Friday afternoon; which probably means it's something more serious than a reboot needed faceplant.

Then it's most likely FUBAR and they'll ned to re-install it

After poking them with a stick again this morning I finally got a response. The tier 1 tech thinks it's software center on my PC that's puked all over itself not something at their end; but escalated the ticket to someone more senior who hasn't gotten back to me yet.

Think of a sentence where the use of the word panoply doesn't come off as pretentious and contrived.
I can't.

Could this be due to the fact that your statement lacks the full panoply of panoplieness?

From Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panoply[^]:
"Thus "panoply" refers to the full armour of a hoplite or heavy-armed soldier, i.e. the shield, breastplate, helmet and greaves, together with the sword and lance."
IMO it's not contrived, but is it pretentious?

We didn't have monopoly, so we played panoply, but, then we had a terrible argument about whether or not we both committed suicide after the last time we played, since that ended in a draw.
